Rear facing camera picture quality on the New Nexus 7

Before I start this article, I’m going to tell you that I don’t know shmotz about cameras, technical terms for photos, or anything to do with professional photography and I’m not going to pretend I do.  I was fine with the 2012 Nexus 7 not having a rear facing camera, just because I don’t feel people will use the rear facing camera on their tablets as much as they think they will. It’s kinda cool to snap a few shots with a tablet when you first get it, but after that I don’t believe the rear facing camera gets used all that often. Maybe for some, but I’m fine without a camera on my tablets.

With that out of the way, I’ll share my experiences taking photos with the New Nexus 7 (that name makes me mental BTW) in just the 48 hours I’ve had it.

In high light situations I’m pleasantly surprised with the rear facing camera on the New Nexus 7. The colors are crisp, the whites are pretty darn white and the picture quality as a whole are pretty impressive for a 5 mp camera on a $269 tablet.  I wouldn’t use this camera for for family portraits, but a quick snap while reading a book, this camera will do just fine.

Photos taken with the rear facing camera on the New Nexus 7

As you can see from the pictures above, it takes a pretty dam good pic in the right lighting.

Now let’s talk about pictures taken in low light situations. This is where things take a drastic turn for the worse. Keep in mind the New Nexus 7 doesn’t have an LED flash next to the 5 MP camera. The pictures in low light situations aren’t much to be desired. They’re grainy, the colors are wonky, there’s tons of noise all over the place (I’m surprised I know what noise means), completely blurry and just not impressive at all. Remember….  Its a tablet not a Nikon.

Pictures in low light situations

If I had a magic lamp and could wish myself in to the meeting when Asus and Google were talking about a camera, I’d of begged them to trash the rear facing camera idea and keep the 16 Gig model at $199. I wasn’t in the meeting and I have THE best tablet available with a so – so camera. I recently got rid of my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 (even worse camera on that tablet) because I picked up a 32g New Nexus 7. With out a doubt this is hands down my tablet pick of 2013, but I would have been just as happy if this beast didn’t have a camera at all.
