Google is rolling out an OTA update for Chromecast, the new build is 12840 and it patches the exploit used to root Chromecast. Here is the commit which patches the exploit. Now I am not sure why Google would patch an exploit used to root a device made by Google, but it is what it is. So if you want root access on your Chromecast then do not take the update.
We know that the update doesn’t ask you for confirmation before installation but hit this thread up to see if any of the methods posted there work for you. Please note neither we nor xda nor the author of the thread are responsible or liable for any bricked Chromecasts. Proceed at your own risk.
