Well, as with all things Google Glass related, this is new. According to a movie patron in Columbus, wearing Google Glass while enjoying a film can lead to a not so pleasant time talking to the authorities. The patron claimed he was watching a movie with his wife, when about an hour into the movie he was approached by a man wielding a badge who grabbed his Google Glasses and demanded he come outside. This led to over three hours of interrogation and allegations that he was recording the movie. After proving that he did not record anything and that the glasses were also his prescription glasses, he was released.

Before anyone gets into an uproar, he did wear a known recording device into a movie theater. And each movie is preceded with warnings of how illegally recording a movie can lead to horrible things. Horrible things like Tom Cruise not being able to buy another mansion. I mean, if you worked for a few months each year while being pampered and flown first class to exotic locations, the least you deserve is being able to buy another home after your grueling three month filming schedule. What are we, animals?

Head to the link below to read the full account of what happened from the individual himself, and pray that Tom Cruise gets another mansion.

Disclaimer: Truth be told, I have no issues with Tom Cruise. Other than the fact he married Katie Holmes. I was saving myself for her.

Disclaimer #2: To my wife, I was kidding about Katie Holmes, I love only you.

Disclaimer #3: Katie, if you are reading this, call me.

Don’t like the aesthetics of the Stock launcher /font /icons of your Android smartphone? the best way to change the look ( even the functionality ) is to install 3rd party launchers like Nova/Apex/Go/ADW and set the icons/theme to one of these beautiful icon packs. Majority of these icon packs/themes usually work with all the launchers listed below.

I realize this is an Android Fan site, but I happen to know a lot of Android fans that dig the Nokia Lumia lineup.

In the above pic is a render leak that looks like the 1020 and 925 had a baby. A big baby at that! Rumors have it the Nokia Lumia 1520 (codename Bandit) will have a 6 inch 1080p display, a quad core processor and a 20 megapixel camera. This is all we have for rumored specs at the moment, but we should see the official announcement at the Nokia event later this month.

A lot of you crack flashers (like I used to be) may read this article in disgust or disagree with me on many different levels.

My name is Dave and I’m a recovering crack flashing addict (this is where you say, HI DAVE!).

Crack flashing ended for me about a year ago when Jelly Bean 4.1 started dropping on most high end devices. Don’t get me wrong! Once there’s a stable CyanogenMod ROM, I get it on my device ASAP. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older (36), or sick of setting up my devices 10 times a week (I understand there’s tools to do this, but I don’t entirely trust them) or maybe I’m just content with CyanogenMod 10.1, Android version 4.2.2 (or until cm 10.2 is stable) and the brilliance that Jelly Bean has brought to our devices.

Let’s rewind here a couple years when most devices were running Froyo (2.2) and even Gingerbread (2.3). I had gotten the original HTC Evo 4g and it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It was a HUGE phone for its time, Sense and the animations were absolutely mind blowing, the Android Market was like nothing I’d experienced before on a flip phone and it’s the device that gave me my first taste of Android addiction. I can remember checking Android blogs hourly to see when Froyo would be hitting my new found friend.

Then one day I saw somebody mention a site by the name of XDA. This is where my crack flashing had started. People had Netflix running on their Evo’s before it was on the market, others had WiFi tethering their WiMax connection, there was even a Hulu fix that was flash able and themes coming out the ying yang with a really slimmed down Sense experience. The icing on the cake was a thread by the name of Steve Kondik that had this thing called CyanogenMod 6 & 7. When I hopped in there, it was over for me. I had a phone with a really clunky Sense experience and had the opportunity to have a near Nexus One experience instead. This is where the ROM crack pipe got most of it’s use. CyanogenMod had become so popular that themes were coming out for it daily and they had to be flashed (there was no theme manager at the time), nightlies were starting to be dropped regularly and a whole slew of other flash able zips that made the whole custom ROM experience exciting. It was like having a new phone everyday. Hell! Even going back and forth from Sense to CyanogenMod to get a fast GPS lock was even exciting and I hardly use GPS. I had to flash something or my day didn’t feel complete.

Now let’s fast forward to 2012 when Jelly Bean 4.1, CM 10 and Google Play officially hit the scene. Google did it right with Jelly Bean and the Google Apps updates. There were no longer fixes that need to be flashed. Google Now was and is still a mind blowing feature that I use on a regular basis. Siri what? CyanogenMod 10 dropped shortly after the Nexus 7 and I realized right then and there my days of constantly doing backups, putting zips on my SD card and setting my devices up weekly were a thing of the past. Everything on Jelly Bean works and works well.

Now let’s fast forward to today. When I get a device, I find the most stable CyanogenMod 10 version available and stick with it until the next Android version drops and that one is stable. I know longer care about my status bar being the most unique, and if I’m feeling frisky that day I’ll grab a cm theme of the market and apply it through the theme manager engine that comes cooked in all CyanogenMod builds these days. CyanogenMod has more than enough fun packed features with in the ROM with out it being a 1 gig sized file. These guys are the Real Deal Holyfield in firmware land. IMO they deserve their own phone and I’d be first in line to grab one. That would totally eliminate any of my flashing period. They look at CyanogenMod as a job, and like the experts they are, they take their jobs seriously and consistently put out great products. Trebuchet, Appolo, Focal, Theme Manager, WiFi tethering and so much more are executed to perfection. Is everything perfect? Nothing is! Especially OEM crap.

My Kondik! If you’re reading this, I hope by the time Key Lime Pie (Android Version 5) comes out, you and your team have your own phone. I realize us Android geeks are the minority in this world, but we wouldn’t be the only ones buying your phone. You can believe that! I also realize I’m a dopey chef and an Android blogger, but if I you guys care what I have to say about picking the company to make the CyanogenMod phone…. HTC FTW!

Let me know what you guys and gals think. Are you still crack flashers or has Jelly Bean and CyanogenMod become your methadone program?

Maybe the most famous gentleman amongst us Android heads.

Yup! He’s doing just what you think he’s doing. He’s down in Texas building some bad ass phones for us Android geeks. Now I’m not sure what’s doing all around him there, but it sure looks important.

In my opinion, Google’s hitting this one out of the park in just about every aspect. Motorola is known for building some of the best hardware (that is until the HTC One) – Made In The USA, getting all us U.S. patriots fired up – Putting up some major dough in U.S. and European advertising ($500 million to be exact) and now tweeting this handsome fella building Moto X’s (the most famous guy in Android Geek land).

This is getting exciting, especially anyone with an upgrade coming in the next few months. We have HTC making some noise, Samsung doing their thing, LG and Sony also banging out some serious phones, now Motorola swinging for the fences with the Moto X and Droid Family, Apple being Apple and Blackberry….. Well, I’ll just Leave this here. Lol

How can I make a phone call from my tablet using my cell number?

So, you just got an Android tablet and want to show people you can make phone calls from it eh? In the past, I’ve held my Nexus 7 up to my ear (even though you don’t have to have it to your ear and probably shouldn’t be having a tablet held against your head for any length of time) and made phone calls from it just to get a reaction from my friends and family (it’s always gotta be about me). Although, making phone calls from your tablet can be very useful and not just attention seeking. I’ve been on my couch with my phone in the other room, with my tablet in my lap (probably shouldn’t have your tablet on your crotch for lengths of time either) and had to make a quick phone call, so I’ve used my tablet at times to get the job done. It is very handy to have the ability to make a quick phone call from your tablet.

This is where the Vonage Mobile app comes in to play. If you ever want to get in to a heated discussion with Android Geeks, head on over to an Android forum and tell them you’ve found the best Tablet calling app. It can get worse than a NY Yankees – Red Sox debate because there are a few tablet phone calling apps that users are loyal to. But, this is my article so I’m sticking with Vonage mobile as my top pick, for one simple reason…. You just need your cell phone number and not Google Voice or your own Google phone number (I know there’s work arounds and fixes but I find Vonage the most direct and simple).

Screen shot from my Galaxy Note 8.0

Once you’ve installed the Vonage Mobile app to your tablet, the app will ask you to plug your cell phone number in. The Vonage Mobile app will then send you a code to punch into your tablet. Bam! That’s it! Now you can pick that tablet up, make a phone call and the person you’re calling will see your cell phone number in their caller ID.

Screen shot from my Galaxy Note 8.0

The Vonage Mobile app syncs all of your contacts, phone call history, the ability to text and tokens (more on tokens later). Don’t let the tokens part spook ya. The app is completely free and so are the phone calls and texts that you make.

I think I’ve used every tablet phone calling app available and as of now Vonage Mobile is hands down my favorite. Oh yeah! You get 3000 minutes free a month here in the U.S. and have to pay a few bucks for more time with an in app purchase. Last month I used 34 minutes talk time according to my cell phone bill, so I’m good.

Here’s where I get lazy and let the developer explain the entire app to you. Keep reading!

What I have noticed from most Android phones is that they require an App in order to be able to take a screenshot of the screen on your phone. That’s not the case with the Samsung Galaxy S4, it’s very simple as you can capture a screenshot easily without any Apps. That’s right… no apps required!! This is now a standard feature on most current versions of Android smartphones. This method makes it really easy and cool.

You are probably asking yourself, why would you need to capture screenshots on your device? It’s as simple as taking the Screenshot. So you can show what is on your screen at any given moment. This gives you control to share what you want whenever you want (not just with photos) with your Android Fans. Have a cool widget, app, or in my case a website that looks really cool and you want to show off. Well you can now simply take a screenshot and send it to fans via email, message or social media apps. I am sure you have a crazy “something” that you want to share with someone that they may have sent you? There are multiple reasons that you may have the desire to do this and now it’s made simple for you.

Just do the following screenshot method for the Samsung Galaxy S4.

1. HOLD down the POWER button and the HOME button at the same time.

Figure 1.0- (androidfannetwork.com)

It is not complicated, really, that’s all you have to do! And now, you too can have a screenshot of your favorite website, to share with Android Fans. You’ll see a message appear on the top of your screen that says “screenshot saved to Camera shots”. With this method, your screenshot will appear in the pictures/screenshots directory. You can also go to your Gallery App to view the screenshots that you have captured. You can then share or save as you see fit. I just happened to share my screenshot to “Dropbox” for safe keeping. Stay posted for more Need to Know tips.

Android is most customization mobile operating system and without having your device rooted 3rd party launchers like Apex/Nova/Go launchers can be installed.

Customization does not end there. You can install themes for these launchers and change look and feel of your OS. Icons, App Drawer, Dock & Font are some of the elements that can be themed by installing launcher themes.

Hundreds of themes are available in Google Play Store that can be downloaded and applied to launcher of your choice through theme settings and majority of them are free of cost too. Many of the free icon packs have donate versions too. Consider buying the donate versions to support development.

Here I am posting 10 best icon packs of my choice. Some of them are Paid but are worth every single ¢ you spent on them. You can find Play store links for download and pointers to developer websites too.
