After a lot of leaks and rumors, the Sony Xperia Z2 has finally been revealed by Sony at Mobile World Congress 2014. The new device builds on the design language of its predecessor, the Xperia Z1. The phone primarily made out of glass and aluminum and also keeps the IP58 water-proof certification of the Z family. On one side, this could be a good news as both the Xperia Z and Z1 were handsome devices and the new phone is no different. But, that also means that the new device is every bit as chunky as the old one.

The device retains the general size of the Xperia Z1 too, but houses a slightly larger 5.2″ display. This has been achieved by reducing the bezel around the display, but it still is quite big a phone. Many among you would be happy to know that Sony finally seems to have learned a lesson and has decided to go with a 1080p IPS panel using a propitiatory technology called Live Colour LEDs. This basically means wider color gamut for an improved viewing experience. The new IPS panel should be able to provide decent viewing angles and better color reproduction.

All the other specifications of the Xperia Z2 have been upgraded too. The 2.3 Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor package, supported by 3GB of RAM, should mean that the Xperia Z2 is plenty fast. All this hardware is powered by a new 3,200MAh battery which is a slight bump up from that of the predecessor. Sony also said that the device will feature built-in active digital noise cancellation facilities, which works together with microphones integrated into the in-box earphones to help to user find some quite time.

The camera, as expected, includes a 20.7 MP Sony G-Lens module that can record 4K video. The device can also shoot at 120fps up to a resolution of 720p and features a slow motion effect. But, surprisingly the camera lacks OIS, instead opting for a software based solution. All things considered, the device is a mere evolution of the previous ones, focusing on the little details that Sony hope will capture the imagination of customers. Overall, this device may not be a flashy announcement like the upcoming Galaxy S5, but is a very mature and balanced product that Sony hopes will change their fortune.
