Motorola announced Project Ara, a new initiative to develop free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones.

Motorola says

‘A phone designed for 6 billion people should be inspired by at least a few thousand. We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines.’

Motorola has been working on Project Ara with Dave Hakkens, the creator of Phonebloks, who shares common vision to develop a highly modular smartphone. They created  a community and did some deep technical work  on developing modular, open and customizable smartphone.

Design – Endo and Modules

Design for Project Ara consists of endo and modules. Endo is the structural frame that holds all modules in place. These modules can be a processor, display, camera, battery and anything that can be fitted into a frame.
