So you got that shiny beautiful AT&T HTC One and have it rooted with a custom recovery? Or you don’t want take the chance with this 208mb update as it may affect current root methods?

Fear no more! XDA Senior Member miller_kid has posted a custom ROM that is stock deodexed, debloated, and of course rooted. If you’re a fan of what HTC is doing with Sense these days, but still want or need to have root access and or a custom recovery, miller_kid’s stock updated ROM is right up your alley. Good news for you Odexed fans, he’s working on a rooted odexed version that should allow you to accept future updates.

So, there it is! We have the 208mb updated (1.58) ROM for us folks that like to keep our sweetheart stock, but still like to get under her hood and do a little tinkering.

If you’re reading this, I shouldn’t even have to tell you, but be sure to have a complete backup of your current ROM and setup, and ALWAYS do a clean flash with a full wipe (especially going from an odexed to a deodexed ROM… Or any ROM for that matter. Link is down below for the AT&T HTC One M8 updated ROM.

Good news for us Nexus and Google Play Edition device owners: Google has made the Google Now Launcher, which was previously only available for Nexus 5 devices, ready to download from the Google Play Store for any Nexus 4, Nexus 7, or Google Play Edition devices. We also have a download link for the Google Now Launcher for those of you without a Nexus or Google Play Edition device (not quite the same, but pretty darn close). Thank you Google (and AFN)!

I’m really liking what Google and Motorola are doing with some of their apps. They’re giving us the ability to install or update certain apps, or in this case Google’s very own Google Now Launcher from Google Play, without having to wait for a system update to get these goodies updated or added.

Anyhoo… The Google Now Launcher is identical to what you get on that beauty of a device, the Nexus 5. A swipe to the right brings you to Google Now. It’s always listening for that magical phrase, “OK Google,” to bring up your Google Now app commands to any page of your launcher. Icons have been resized (for the good or bad) as well.

The alternate download link we’ve provided is for non Nexus and Google Play devices. This Google Now launcher for non Nexus and GPE devices has all of the above functions, except for the launcher hearing that “OK Google” on any page of your launcher. Yup! You’ll have to do all that hard work of swiping to the right, get to the Google Now tile, and then say “OK Google”. The launcher still works perfectly aside from that.

I applaud Google for putting the Google Now launcher on the Play Store, and I hope their first update makes it available for all devices.

Download link for Nexus and GPE devices:

The update is a little different than usual in that it is not being released as an Over-The-Air (OTA) update because of memory limitations on the device. Instead of an OTA, HTC is offering this as a Rom Update Utility (RUU) which is a Windows executable file that automates the flashing process. Updating with an RUU formats your user data on the device so use HTC’s backup tools first, then update and restore your backups.

From Mo Versi w/HTC:

Thank you for your support on HTC EVO 4G LTE 4.3 + Sense 5MR update. Below is the link for the final software release that includes support on Win8. Please note the following as this is an RUU update (side load):

It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by installing this software may be covered under warranty.*Please understand that you will not be able to return your device to the original state or earlier software, and going forward your device may not be held covered under the warranty for all claims resulting from installing this software. HTC bears no responsibility if your device is no longer usable afterwards. We strongly suggest that you do not install this software unless you are confident that you understand the risks involved and the potential consequences both to your device and to your warranty.

In order to install the SW, double click the RUU file with your device connected to the PC. The upgrade process will take approximately 20 minutes. Please do not unplug the device from the PC.

Download link here

Thanks,

You can download the Windows RUU for the Sprint Evo 4G LTE directly from HTC and, if you need assistance with the update, you can get help at this XDA thread.

Mac and Linux users, we have you covered too. You will need to flash the firmware manually with fastboot using the extacted ROM.zip files below. This is a two part update, the first zip updates the EVO 4G LTE’s base firmware, drivers, and radio. The second zip contains the 4.13.651.3 ROM itself. Download the files to your adb folder, power off and reboot into bootloader mode. When ready, follow the steps below to flash the zip files in order.

The Nexus 7 FHD LTE received a minor bump to Android 4.4.2 Release 2, which is a compatibility update with changes requested by Verizon for certification on their network. If you are using your Nexus 7 FHD LTE on a GSM carrier, you will not likely be prompted to update, but it does show right away after inserting a Verizon SIM and forces you to download over WiFi.

You can try checking your settings for a system update, or sideload the small (37Mb) KVT49L OTA manually using the direct download link and instructions below.

Download and save to your adb folder

Turn your Nexus 7 FHD LTE off, and reboot into bootloader mode by holding Power and Volume Down

Select Recovery using the Volume Up, and press power to confirm

At the red triangle, press Power and Volume Up, and you should see the recovery menu

Use the volume keys again to scroll through the menu to highlight Apply update from adb and press Power to confirm

On your computer, open a terminal window and enter the command:

adb sideload 899e0334e124dbb42ce66cec2628def38342ddfb.signed-razorg-KVT49L-from-KOT49H.899e0334.zip

Let your Nexus 7 FHD LTE do its thing, reboot, and you are all set to “officially” use your Verizon data plan!

Direct Download: Google

The full KVT49L factory image to restore your Nexus 7 FHD LTE is also available here.

Native screen recording was introduced in Android 4.4, but hasn’t been mentioned much since first announced. Still, it can be pretty handy if you want to show someone what it is you’re talking about. For me, screen recording is screen shot 2.0 and an invaluable tool for creating guides and showing friends and family how to do something when I get the, “How do I do this,” call.

By using the Android Debug Bridge (adb) command screenrecord, you can start a video capture of what you are doing and save it locally to your device storage in mp4 format. From there, you can upload it to YouTube, share to Google+, or pretty much anything else you want to do with it.

To get started, you will first need to enable adb on your device. If you have never enabled this before, go into the settings sub-menu About Phone first and tap on the Build number seven times. When you back out into the settings menu again, Developer options will be there. Set Developer options to on and check USB debugging to enable it. Ironically, I couldn’t show you a screen recording showing you how to enable adb, so enjoy this GIF made of from screen shots instead.

Next, you need a working adb environment on your computer. You can get this from developer.android.com and follow the instructions there to install the full Android SDK, or hit this 15 second adb installer featured on XDA. Once you have adb setup, plug in your device’s micro-USB cable, let the drivers install, and test that it recognized your device by opening a command window and entering:

adb devices

If this returned your serial number, then you are ready to go. If not, driver issues or missing the security pop-up on your device to accept adb connections are the top two reasons.

Once you are sorted, let’s make a recording. The command will be adb shell screenrecord, followed by options, and then the location and name you want to save the file. Devices with high-resolution screens may throw an error but it does start the recording. This is normal and reverts to the highest resolution the AVC encoder can handle. You can always add a –size option if desired to get rid of the error or tweak the bit rate.

Options:
–size WIDTHxHEIGHT
Set the video size, e.g. “1280×720″. Default is the device’s main
display resolution (if supported), 1280×720 if not. For best results,
use a size supported by the AVC encoder.
–bit-rate RATE
Set the video bit rate, in megabits per second. Default 4Mbps.
–time-limit TIME
Set the maximum recording time, in seconds. Default / maximum is 180.
–rotate
Rotate the output 90 degrees.
–verbose
Display interesting information on stdout.
–help

For our example, to enter adb shell screenrecord command in your terminal window, sized to 720×1280 resolution and saved to the sdcard as my-recording-name-here.mp4:

adb shell screenrecord –size 720×1280 /sdcard/my-recording-name-here.mp4

After you enter the command, do whatever it is you want to capture. Recording continues until Ctrl-C is hit or the 3 minute time limit is reached.

When done, browse to the folder the video is saved on your device and see what you have. If you need to remove the beginning or end of the video, some devices include a built-in editor or you can download one from Google Play. YouTube and Google+ Photos also has some limited editing tools. Any serious editing and you’ll want to copy the file to your computer. Unfortunately, there is no sound captured but you can add audio later in editing if desired.

That is all you need to capture a screen recording on Android 4.4! If you found this helpful or have any pointers, let us know in the comments!

What this means is Verizon HTC One owners running Android 4.3 can S-OFF and unlock their bootloader to flash any partition. This bypasses Verizon’s stupid policy of blocking the HTCDev.com website tool which owners of other carrier models use to unlock the bootloader. Yes, now you can have custom ROM’s too!

These guys are awesome for bringing this. If firewater is something that helps you get S-OFF on your HTC, please consider donating on their page. Files and instructions are at the Firewater S-OFF website.

Just like the Sprint HTC One, the Sprint HTC One Max can also be SIM unlocked for use on GSM networks. If you wish to use the One Max from Sprint on AT&T or T-Mobile, please note that it does not have compatible bands to get LTE on either of these networks.

LTE will not work on both AT&T and T-Mobile
HSPA+ will work on AT&T
Refarmed HSPA+ will work on T-Mobile

Here are few simple steps for unlocking the SIM. This method works only for HTC One Max from Sprint.

Disclaimer : Neither we nor the person who posted the method on XDA will be responsible for what you do on your device. Please read the instructions carefully before doing anything.

1) Unlock the boot-loader on your device through htcdev.com and flash any De odexed ROM like SkyDragon. If you are on Stock unrooted De-odexed ROM, Root your HTC One Max from Sprint using the steps listed in this post.

Finger print scanner does not work after unlocking boot-loader on HTC One Max. You can get it working by following the steps listed here.

2) Using any root explorer app and replace the HTCOMADM_SPCS.apk from /system/app on your device with this file.

3) Install SIM Unlock Helper from Google Play Store.

4) Open SIM Unlock Helper, Ignore “Device Check Fail” or “This Device is not a Sprint HTC One! Therefor, this Program will not run” warnings. Select “Display SIM Unlock Log” from Menu (by hitting 3-dots on upper right hand side), grant permissions when prompted. It shows “SIM Unlock Log”. Hit back button and now it says “Device Verified” and “Root Available” messages.

5) Tap start on SIM Unlock Helper to open OMADM Test Client, Scroll down through the menu and select the option “SIM LOCK”. Internally it sets the SIM Lock flag to unlock and it usually takes a couple of seconds. Your device will freeze during this time and returns to normal after the completion. Hit back button to view check SIM Unlock Result. If it says successful, reboot the device and it should be unlocked now and accept SIMs from GSM carriers.

6) Insert any SIM card (GSM) and set Network Mode (Settings ->Mobile Data) to GSM/UMTS only. Now your device should switch to GSM carrier. For mobile data services, You should create a new APN and set your GSM carrier specific values appropriately.
