A few days ago Google pushed out an OTA update for the Chromecast which blocked the root exploit by GTVhacker, well now you have a way to update to update Chromecast to build 12840 without losing root. Keep in mind this will block all further updates and also does not update the kernel on the Chromecast.
Assuming you have a Chromecast which is already rooted and you have not taken the OTA 12840, download this file (all credits to tvall). Once downloaded flash the file to Chromecast using the original root instructions here.
