Two days ago Google released the Google Cast SDK. With this, developers can now add the ability to stream almost anything from a mobile app to a Chromecast. However, this temporarily broke support for Koushik Dutta‘s AllCast app. Today on G+ he announced that he fixed this issue in under 20 minutes. This is good news to anyone that is using AllCast.

AllCast allows screen sharing from your mobile device to your television via Roku, AppleTV, Xbox, Chromecast, and a few other devices. While Google Cast SDK will now allow officially offer support for apps to be displayed on Chromecast, not everyone wants to put a Chromecast on a TV that already has an Xbox or Roku device. Let us know if you use AllCast. I enjoy being able to stream to my television without a cord and without being limited to an app having official Chromecast support.

Yesterday, Google made Google Cast SDK, the technology that enables you to stream the content from mobile devices to devices with larger displays like televisions, available for developing and publishing Google Cast-ready apps.

Google says this SDK is simple to integrate into existing apps without any need to write a completely new app and is available cross-platform for Android, Web (on Chrome through Google Cast browser extension), and iOS developers.

+Paul Carff , a Developer in the Chromecast team  posted a four minute long video providing a bried overview of Google Cast SDK model and components and how to get started with it.

All Chromecast devices have already been updated to the lastest software, which includes support for the Google Cast SDK, and the roll-out of new Google Cast extension for Chrome browser supporting the latest SDK has started. The Google Cast SDK for Android is available as part of the Google Play Services 4.2 update (already rolling out to Android devices)

+Koushik Dutta, Developer of AllCast application which includes support for several other cast applications has posted that his app will be updated soon to include the Google Cast SDK support. He says

The new Chromecast SDK supports the MediaRouter ACTION_PLAY/CATEGORY_REMOTE_MEDIA, which makes the Chromecast a good citizen of the Android media router framework. Will update AllCast soon.

Update : Allcast app with Chromecast support is now live on Google Play Store.

If you haven’t taken the hint, Motorola really wants you to enjoy a Moto X. First they ran a Black Friday sale, then they tried to run it again, then a few days later they did it again. Then they permanently cut the price to $399 for the 16GB and $449 for the 32GB version.

White Nexus 7(2013)

Google is dropping lots of goodies into the Play Store today. They just added a white Nexus 7. Currently it is available only in the 32GB Wi-Fi configuration and is priced at $269. They are also offering free shipping and a $35 Google Play credit if you purchase the Nexus 7 and a Chromecast. It is currently showing as “leaving the warehouse in 1 to 2 days” so you might want to hurry.

Google announced 10 new apps that are now compatible with the Chromecast WiFi HDMI dongle. A few of the apps on the list allow you to stream content that from your device or your cloud service. It is not exactly the direct casting we were all hoping for, but this does do essentially the same job. I was able to cast content stored on my device and a few cloud services using one of the newest additions to the Chromecast app list, Avia. Plex was force closing on all of my devices running KitKat so I cannot really comment on that app just yet.

Just in time for the holidays, 10 new apps have been added to the Chromecast family. Beginning today you can enjoy action sports, news, music videos, and more with the addition of VEVO, Red Bull.TV, Songza, PostTV, Viki, Revision 3 and BeyondPod.

And for those many holiday gatherings, you can also cast your personal media straight to your TV using Plex, Avia, or RealPlayer Cloud apps. There’s no need to huddle around small screens when you can share your own photos and videos using your phone, tablet, or laptop.

Learn more about the supported apps and stay up to date on what’s new at chromecast.com/apps. To start casting from these apps, make sure you have the latest versions for Android or iOS, or use Chrome to cast from your laptop. These apps will be rolling out over the next few days.

We are still waiting for the Chromecast to offer direct casting of any content on your device or cloud without using a third-party app, but this is certainly a step in the right direction. Keep these great updates coming Google and app developers.

Chromecast

There have been a few deals pop up for the Chromecast before, and all usually sell out pretty quickly. Right now Amazon has it listed for $29.98, and it includes a $6 Google Play credit. This is only $5 off retail, but including the credit is a nice bonus and makes it one of the better deals so far. If you have been on the fence about purchasing one, stop hesitating. It is a very capable device with Google allowing more apps to add streaming support everyday.

Walmart is joining the long list of retailers selling the Google Chromecast. Remember the old days when you had to hit eBay, CTO etc for a Chromecast because everyone and their mother were out of stock?  Days are different now for those of you looking to get that dynamite dongle.

Walmart is now selling the Chromecast at limited stores at the moment, but luckily for you they’re offering to ship it directly to you or ship it to your local Walmart for in store pickup.

If you’re on the fence about purchasing the Google Chromecast, get off the fence and get on the phone and see if your local Walmart has any Chromecast’s in stock. They’re only $35 and honest to god worth every penny.

This is hardly news that’s going to rock your foundation, but pretty cool news nonetheless. With the Chromecast’s wide availability now Verizon may not be the place you’ll necessarily get your Chromecast, but it’s nice that Verizon see’s how great of a device this little dongle is and now has it for sale online (online only at the moment). 

For those of you that have $35 laying around and want an absolutely handy little gadget that makes your TV and Android devices just that much more bad ass…  Go get a Chromecast. The Chromecast supported app list is starting to grow at a rapid pace. My wife and I use our Chromecast for music and movies almost daily. The $35 I spent on that dang fun dongle has been worth every penny.

One of my favorite little gadgets in my house is getting better and better by the day. The Google Chromecast is an absolute pleasure to have hanging from the TVs in my house. Just a few weeks ago Pandora was added to the Chromecast list of streaming options and Now we have the HBO GO app getting some Chromecast streaming love. Of course you have to be an HBO customer, have the HBO GO app installed and have that nifty $35 Chromecast.

I was fortunate enough to get a Chromecast right around when it first came out (Thanks to CTO) and it’s been a lot of fun watching app by app get added to the list of supported for the Chromecast.

Pandora just updated their app to look pretty on Android tablets just a few days ago. This morning upon opening the Pandora app for my daily Rolling Stones fix I noticed a Chromecast sharing option. This is fantastic news for maniacs with banging surround sound systems connected to their Chromecasts (me). For those of you having issues getting the Chromecast icon showing up, just unplug your Chromecast, plug it back in and launch Pandora. Did the trick for me.
