The KitKat updates for all kinds of devices from all kinds of carriers are starting to pop up left and right here folks! Big Red is getting in on the fun with one of their flagship devices, the Verizon HTC One. Verizon has been surprising me lately with their timely updates, and I applaud them for that. With the M8 in the foreseeable future, it wouldn’t have surprised me to see feet dragging on Android version updates for the M7 HTC One. However, the HTC One is such an epic device with more than capable specs for these updates, we can only hope they continue.

With this KitKat update, you can expect to see small visual changes to the way BlinkFeed works, as well as redesigns in the Settings, Gallery, and Music apps as well as the lockscreen. You’ll also notice some Verizon specific changes to low light photography and power management adjustments.

If you’re not seeing an update message up in your status bar, I suggest you hit the settings, and mash that system updates button. It’s on its way and will be on your Verizon HTC One any second now.

Let us know in the comments of any other changes you may have noticed that we haven’t mentioned above. Happy KitKat for you loyal Verizon HTC One owners. We all know it’s been a bumpy ride since jump street

Verizon just announced a “promotion” that will allow Edge Program participants to upgrade their device in 30 days instead of 6 months. Now before you get too excited, Verizon customers, there is some fine print involved. Just like the old program, you are required to have paid off at least 50% of the value of your device and trade the device in to be eligible for this early upgrade. This was also announced as a promotion, but no end date was given.

This plan really makes no financial sense in any way I can see. Let’s use a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 as an example device. For all of these examples, I will show your out of pocket cost after you get rid of the phone. For re-sale values, I used the average sale price of this device on two popular reseller sites: CellTraderOnline.com and Swappa.com. The average price for a used Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on Verizon is currently $548.

Full retail price of this device is $699.99. Phone is yours to keep or sell. $699.99 purchase price minus $548 resell, loss of $151.99

On the Verizon Edge Plan, the payment is $29.31 a month. You pay off the device over the course of 24 months. If for some reason you went past the 14 day return period and then wanted to get rid of the phone, you would have to give Verizon the phone back and pay them $350 for the privilege of using the phone for 30 days. There is currently a zero dollar down promotion for those with approved credit, so on this plan you would have to pay $350 and give Verizon the phone. Loss of $350

You can see in the example above that the Edge program is by no means intended to benefit the customer, it is meant to ring every last penny out of your bank account. It is a good concept when your service is discounted, like T-Mobile, but when you are paying an inflated service cost that was built with subsidies in mind and then pay again for your phone, you are always going to lose.

So, go ahead, use this new plan if you have money to burn. Or you could just send me the money, either way you are out hundreds of dollars. But if you send it to me, I will send you pictures of me spending it, so there’s that.

T-Mobile has announced that they are purchasing 700 MHz spectrum licenses in Block A from Verizon this morning. They will be sending over $2.365 billion in cash and $950 million worth of AWS spectrum licenses in exchange for the much needed 700 MHz licenses. Lower frequency spectrum helps penetrate buildings better and has a greater coverage area than higher frequencies. These licenses give T-Mobile lower band coverage in 9 out of the top 10 markets in the US. These purchases still have to be approved by the FCC, so it will probably be a few months before we see these frequencies go live.

It’s worth noting that this block of spectrum is not compatible with either AT&T or Verizon’s 700MHz bands, nor do any current T-Mobile phones support it. The spectrum Verizon is selling is in the A block of the 700MHz spectrum, while AT&T and Verizon hold the B and C blocks respectively. The good news here is that by the time this ends up live in Q4 this year, we’ll all probably have new phones.

Today, Verizon took to Twitter to officially announce a release date for the Moto G. It will be available for purchase for $99 off contract on January 9th. It has also recently been spotted at Best Buy on the shelves available for purchase at the same price. This a great price for a great phone that was already priced to sell at $179 off contract. Verizon Wireless plans start at $60 for unlimited minutes and texts with 2GB of data.

This is great news for anyone looking to switch to Verizon prepaid service but not finding a device to their liking. The Moto G is not a high-end phone but it gives a lot more than other Android phones at this price point. Motorola is also pumping out OS updates to their stable of phones lately, including Kit Kat to the GSM version of the Moto G a few weeks ago, which hints that the Android 4.4 update mentioned in Verizon’s Moto G announcement for is not far off.

Verizon HTC One Android 4.3 OTA Released

The HTC One Android 4.3 update made its way through Verizon’s approval process, and Verizon HTC One owners are starting to receive the notification that they can update today (myself included).

The update brings your HTC One up to build 2.10.605.1 and includes a new radio baseband 1.12.41.1112_2. Although the Android version was changed to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the new firmware still includes HTC’s Sense 5.0. A full changelog is available at Verizon’s support website. The short version is the update contains some bugfixes and new Verizon bloat.

Any developers that want to pick apart the OTA package, you can grab it here or from XDA member carm01 in his thread here. Unrooted HTC One owners will need to wait for the OTA to push by Verizon, and remember that accepting the OTA may break the current S-OFF method for the HTC One.

Droid DNA owners, your wishes will soon be granted. HTC and Verizon have not forgot about this device (yet). Verizon has finally approved an update which will bring DNA owners to 4.2.2 and Sense 5.

Mohammed Versi, HTC’s executive director, tweeted that Verizon has approved the update after a 4 month wait.

DNA Owners! We have received technical approval from Verizon on OS 4.2.2 + Sense 5!! Thank you for your patience, the OTA will go out soon!!

Versi also replied to a question on Twitter that it should start pushing out tomorrow.

@bkgamer @DrLovePiston Verizon pushes out the update. Should start receiving by tomorrow. Thanks.

This will bring along BlinkFeed as well as a nice overhaul in the visual department. It has definitely been a long wait for HTC Droid DNA owners, but at least they have confirmed the device is still on HTC’s list to receive 4.3/4.4. The Droid DNA is still a worthy phone in this day and age even though it was overshadowed by the HTC One.

To those that are still rocking the Droid DNA, I salute you. I owned the coveted red employee edition you see above and can say this was one amazing piece of hardware. So for the Droid DNA owners out there, let us know when you get the update and how you like Sense 5!

This is hardly news that’s going to rock your foundation, but pretty cool news nonetheless. With the Chromecast’s wide availability now Verizon may not be the place you’ll necessarily get your Chromecast, but it’s nice that Verizon see’s how great of a device this little dongle is and now has it for sale online (online only at the moment).

For those of you that have $35 laying around and want an absolutely handy little gadget that makes your TV and Android devices just that much more bad ass… Go get a Chromecast. The Chromecast supported app list is starting to grow at a rapid pace. My wife and I use our Chromecast for music and movies almost daily. The $35 I spent on that dang fun dongle has been worth every penny.
