The long anticipated Android 4.4.2 update for the T-Mobile and GSM unlocked Moto X is live and pushing to owners now. The new version is build 161.44.25.en.US and is 146.7Mb in size. This is not only for T-Mobile Moto X owners, but anyone that owns GSM unlocked Moto X, model XT1053, including the GSM Developer Edition. If you have a carrier logo on the back of your Moto X, this is not for you.

A few highlights, aside from Android 4.4.2, are added support for printing photos, Google Docs, GMail messages, and other content via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cloud printers; a battery life bug fix that a small number of users on Android 4.4 experienced; and a bug fix for e-mail services like Microsoft Exchange to take care of intermittent delays in data synchronization. Release notes are available at Motorola’s customer support website.

If you have not received a notification that this system update is ready then don’t panic, we have you covered. The OTA package and instructions for you to manually install are below.

From your Moto X, download the OTA here to your internal storage, by default it will save to Download/

When the download is complete, power off your Moto X

Next, boot into bootloader mode by holding Volume Down and Power

At the bootloader screen, use Volume Down and scroll to Recovery, then press Volume Up to select it

Once you rebooted into recovery mode you will see No Command. Hold Volume Up and press Power to show the recovery menu

Use Volume Down to highlight apply update from sdcard then press Power to enter

At the Choose a package to install screen, use the Volume buttons to highlight Download/ and press Power

Use the Volume buttons to highlight Blur_Version.161.44.25.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip and press Power

The update will start installing and needs 5 minutes to complete. When your Moto X reboots, you will have the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat available.

That’s it, enjoy your KitKat!

Miss out on the Black Friday Moto X sales? Is $399 for a 16GB and $449 for a 32GB customized Moto X too much for you? Well, you’re in luck!

On Monday, January 27th from 3-4PM EST Motorola will be holding another sale; this time it is for $100 off for any non-contract Moto X, including the Dev edition, and wood back models. The sale is only while supplies last, and if the Black Friday sale is any indication, supplies will only last for a few minutes. Good news though, if you do miss out, Motorola is also announcing that you can still get $70 off through Valentine’s Day.

This is not only a great deal, but also a great value. You will be free of a contract and have one of the top phones on the market at your disposal. If you have not, head on over to the Moto Maker site, and design yours today. Look at what $299 will get you and get ready for 3PM EST on the 27th.

Motorola has provided a Motorola Assist update allowing you to now reply with voice to a SMS while in driving mode. Prior to the new version, 1.3.15, the Moto X would read the text to you, and if you had it set up, would simply reply with, “I’m driving and will get back to you soon.” This is a nice update, especially when you consider this phone is built around the “always listening” concept. The Motorola Assist update also includes several bug fixes including better ability to detect when you are driving and choosing which music app to launch.

Motorola also just pushed out an update to Touchless Control, but it is listed as bug fixes only. This now brings it to version 4.2.02.1. So not as sexy, but hey, bug fixes are always nice.

If for some reason you did not jump before, Motorola is now giving away a free Chromecast if you purchase your Moto X off contract before January 14th and use the promo code “STREAM.” This is arguably the best Android phone on the market now, and it is priced well below comparable smartphones off contract. Is a free Chromecast enough to make you switch over? Let us know in the comments below or reach out to us on G+, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, or email us or, well you get the point. We’re available.

My personal favorite phone for 2013 just got even better in the price department. Motorola’s Senior Vice President of Product Management, Rick Osterloh, announced the Moto X will be selling for $399 for an off-contract purchase. The $399 price tag gets you a customized Moto X by Moto Maker with 16GB of storage. This excludes the bamboo back which will still set you back an additional $100 for some wood. Not mentioned is the the Moto X with 32GB of storage also dropped in price and is available for $449.

This is incredible news going in to 2014 and hopefully will be a trend setter for this year and years to come (I’m looking at you Samsung). I imagine the Moto X will be essentially free when you ink a two-year contract with your current crooks carriers.

In my opinion, the Moto X was the most innovative phone for 2013 for countless reasons and now this news of a $399 price tag just sealed the deal for the best phone of the year for me.

Now for my favorite quote going in to 2014 -

“Because you should have the freedom to buy a great device when you want, without chaining yourself down.

Happy new year!”

Rick Osterloh
Senior Vice President – Product Management
