If you just read our article on the Installer release, I’m sure you’re all wondering how the CyanogenMod Installer works now that they’ve released a beta app/beta Windows installer. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s a simple process with a few perks and one major caveat in my opinion.

Instructions

1. Start by downloading the app here.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Visit CyanogenMod’s site for the Windows installer.

4. The Windows installer will walk you through several steps (if your device is supported)

a. It has you plug your device in, allow your PC’s address always, and then unlock the bootloader.

5. It will load a CyanogenMod bootloader image (the mascot) and download/install the latest official version of the ROM.

6. That is it. It’ll reboot and CyanogenMod will be loaded on your device!

Caveat, you say?

Here’s the deal… If you want to revert your device back to stock, you better be a knowledgeable power user of Android already because there’s absolutely no way to revert yourself. There’s definitely benefits of using Cyanogen over Touchwiz or any of the other OEMs skinned versions, but if you want those features back or need to return your device to stock for whatever reason, you will need to know a lot more than just following an installer/prompt.

If you have a Nexus device, it’s pretty simple and self explanatory if you use something like Wug’s Nexus Root Toolkit. Any other device though, you’ll have to go searching for an answer elsewhere like XDA or RootzWiki.

I ran this on a Nexus 7 (2012), and it installed extremely quickly and simply. I reverted back to stock with Wug’s toolkit so it was simple both ways for me!

If you have any questions, I’ll be more than happy to answer them in the comments!

Is the Nexus 5 camera a little lacking in your opinion? Does it seem just a bit flat and dull? Well, it is a Nexus, so there is a Zip for that. Developer Jishnu Sir has created a flashable zip file to improve some key areas of the Nexus 5 camera. Here is a list from his post for version 1:

1) Bitrate are as follows:

Stock 720P@12 Mb/s.

Stock 1080P@17 Mb/s.

Modded 720P@20 Mb/s.

Modded 1080P@26 Mb/s.

2) Audio Bitrate quality :

Stock = 96000 Kb/s

Modded = 192000 Kb/s

3) Image Encode Quality :

Stock = 90.

Modded = 99.

4) JPEG Encode Quality :

Stock = 80.

Modded = 99.

5) Modified hammerhead.camera.so for better sharpness of the pictures. Increased the Sharpeness to 90 from 75.

He is currently up to version 1.2, with or without noise cancellation, so make sure you read his change log. As always, read before doing anything, and have a backup handy just in case. Is this something you would try out? Already tried it? Let us know below in the comments or on our Google+ page. Happy flashing!

Android 4.3 flashable rom is now available for the Moto X. The rom has been built from an engineering build system dump of T-Mobile Moto X and has some extra logging tools but it is Android 4.3 none the less. Please note it also contains the 4.3 kernel and the radio is from T-Mobile so flashing it may cause issues on other carrier branded Moto X.

You need an unlocked bootloader and CWM or TWRP installed to flash this Android 4.3 on your Moto X.

A lot of you would have been disappointed when the Nexus S was left out of the Android 4.3 upgrade by Google, but need not worry you can have Android 4.3 on your Nexus S. The Android 4.3 build JSS15J has been ported to work on the Nexus S.

What works

RIL ( Call, SMS, MMS)

WiFi

Bluetooth

Sound

Camera

Vibration

Sensor

Internal Storage

EGL / Touch screen

The only issue to be ironed out is that the camera force closed sometimes and that should not take long but then again no ETA’s peeps.

As a person that uses my primary phone for corporate email I unfortunately cannot root my phone or use custom ROMs. Generally I am regulated to accepting carrier ROMs that are full of bloatware and slow to update. Thankfully the folks on XDA have been able to convert a carrier HTC One to a Developers or Google Edition. I was able to try both versions on a pair of black ATT Ones and thought it would be helpful to share the differences.
Process

The process to install either ROM while maintaining stock recovery and without root is very similar. There are several great step by step instructional threads on XDA so I will not be providing instructions. You would need to do the following:

1.S-off (I used revone)
2.Change CID to appropriate (completed in fastboot)
3.Install Developer RUU (exe) or Google RUU (zip)
4.Change MID if necessary (I did not have to do this on the ATT versions)

Developer Edition
The Developer Edition ROM is currently JB 4.1.2 with Sense 5. It has all the great benefits from HTC such as Blinkfeed, Zoe, IR and the nice camera app. After installing the RUU I was able to receive and install a small OTA update. Hopefully 4.2.2 will be coming soon.

Google Edition
The Google Edition ROM is currently JB 4.2.2. Of course it’s pure Android goodness without Sense. You do lose Blinkfeed, Zoe, IR and have the stock Android camera interface. I do prefer the lock screen from the pure Android. I have not received any OTA updates for the Google Edition.

Quick Comparison
Both ROMs are great compared to the ATT version. Very streamlined and clean. GE is sexy and extremely fluid/smooth. It does seem a bit quicker without the Sense overhead. Also the 4.2.2 notification bar is vastly superior to what’s currently available on the DE with 4.1.2. It runs well on the HTC One hardware. On GE you also have the fixed Google Search widget at the top of each screen and the unique icons/widgets from the N4.
DE also runs very well on the HTC One hardware. I think we have reached a point where the speed and stability stock ROMs are very comparable to custom ROMs. Sense 5 does add the benefit of Blinkfeed for social media and news updates. The IR blaster app, Zoe and FM radio are also nice benefits to maintain with your DE One. The camera app seems to be easier to snap pictures as well however I believe that can be added to the GE version via apk.

Conclusion
I personally prefer the DE version at this time mainly because of Zoe and the IR blaster. There are some great things in the GE edition such as the clean interface, Google Search widget and easier, cool lock screen to navigate settings menu. Bottom line is we have two great choices for installing a non-carrier branded ROM which removes bloatware, maintains OTA and adds native tethering. You can’t go wrong with either.

Just one man’s opinion, would love to hear yours.

Android 4.3 ports are starting to come in, slowly but surely. An Android 4.3 rom, built from source is now available for the first generation KindleFire. Below are the basic requirements for you to try Android 4.3 on your first generation Kindle Fire:-

Should be running FireFireFire Bootloader 1.4a

Should have a custom recovery like TWRP installed

You can use this thread to install the FireFireFire bootloader and install a custom recovery. Once done all you need to do is download the Android 4.3 rom and gapps from here, place the zip files in your Kindle Fire’s internal memory and flash them in recovery (rom followed by gapps). Make sure to do a factory reset from recovery before flashing the zip files and also take a backup.

In case you need to root Android 4.3 instructions are available here.
