Man

Android 4.4.2 Nexus Factory Images and Binaries Released

Following a minor OTA push to the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and all Nexus 7 models, Google has posted the Android 4.4.2 factory images and proprietary binaries to their developer website.

Factory images are used to restore a Nexus device back to the stock version of Android that Google provides. This is pretty useful if you are a flashaholic like some of us and get in a bind or just want to restore your Nexus back to stock and see what Google cooked up before you go back to Paranoid Android, OmniROM, CyanogenMOD or a host of other customized ROMs.

For developers, Nexus binaries are used to supplement the “open” source code of the Android Open Source Project. Binaries include proprietary code and drivers for the chipset, camera, and other hardware. When licensed by Google to be released, these are the already compiled “closed” source parts that need to be included for a complete, bootable, ROM for the device to be built from AOSP source code.

It is a good idea to at keep a factory image for your Nexus on hand in case you need it. You can use 7zip to extract the files from the .tgz archive linked for your device and follow the directions on Google’s Developer page to restore your device.

Source: Google Developers

Update 12/12

Google screwed up the links so a number of the factory image downloads do not work. Working links for the 4.4.2 factory images are below.

The CyanogenMod team has released CM 11.0 M1 for all actively AOSP supported Nexus devices which include the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, all variants of the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10. Instead of releasing CM11 nightlies, CyanogenMod decided to release these M1 builds citing the hardware code for current Nexus devices comes from Google’s AOSP source and should have minimal device specific issues.

Hit the links below to take you to the device specific download page at CyanogenMod.org. The CyanogenMod team recommends to double-check your download and to use ClockworkMod recovery instead of TWRP.

If you just read our article on the Installer release, I’m sure you’re all wondering how the CyanogenMod Installer works now that they’ve released a beta app/beta Windows installer. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s a simple process with a few perks and one major caveat in my opinion.

Instructions

1. Start by downloading the app here.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Visit CyanogenMod’s site for the Windows installer.

4. The Windows installer will walk you through several steps (if your device is supported)

a. It has you plug your device in, allow your PC’s address always, and then unlock the bootloader.

5. It will load a CyanogenMod bootloader image (the mascot) and download/install the latest official version of the ROM.

6. That is it. It’ll reboot and CyanogenMod will be loaded on your device!

Caveat, you say?

Here’s the deal… If you want to revert your device back to stock, you better be a knowledgeable power user of Android already because there’s absolutely no way to revert yourself. There’s definitely benefits of using Cyanogen over Touchwiz or any of the other OEMs skinned versions, but if you want those features back or need to return your device to stock for whatever reason, you will need to know a lot more than just following an installer/prompt.

If you have a Nexus device, it’s pretty simple and self explanatory if you use something like Wug’s Nexus Root Toolkit. Any other device though, you’ll have to go searching for an answer elsewhere like XDA or RootzWiki.

I ran this on a Nexus 7 (2012), and it installed extremely quickly and simply. I reverted back to stock with Wug’s toolkit so it was simple both ways for me!

If you have any questions, I’ll be more than happy to answer them in the comments!

So here it is! Nothing special, but if you’re still waiting for that Nexus 5 to come in the mail and want to see what to expect when that beauty comes then take a peak at the unboxing.

This unboxing is the 16G Black Nexus 5. For the folks that are on the fence and have a few extra bucks to spend, get off the fence and pull the trigger. The Nexus 5 is an absolutely beautiful phone. I haven’t put it down since the unboxing.

BTW. I had a little brain fart during the unboxing with the Sim card and volume rocker placements. Cut me some slack! I was a little excited.

Remember to subscribe and give the video a thumbs up.

“Coming in early 2014, users who have verified their phone number and have discovery turned on will have their names and Google Profile photos display whenever they call you, or you call them (it’s great if a new friend who hasn’t been saved in your contacts yet calls you). Check your Google Account to make sure you are happy with how you appear on caller ID by Google: http://goo.gl/g9P3Bp ”

The Phone app on 4.4 has Google Search integrated into its core, and starting in 2014, those who have verified their number with Google+ will have their picture be displayed when they make an outgoing call. Google also has Caller ID built in. Google will match the number with the business and display it appropriately on your phone.

We’ll keep you updated as the “People” portion of the Caller ID function rolls out! If you’re not ready for it, go ahead and get your number verified so we can start seeing your pretty faces when you call!
