Google confirmed that Galaxy Nexus is not on the list of devices getting Android 4.4 KitKat update as it falls outside of 18 month update window. However this is not stopping the custom ROMs based on Android 4.4 for Galaxy Nexus.

Couple of custom ROMs , SimKat ( from SlimBean team ) and A Taste of Kitkat are already up for download over Galaxy Nexus forums – XDA. Though these are listed as Alpha builds, performance is good except for few bugs like Graphical glitches during the rotatescreen animation, crt off effect, screenshot animation and while browsing through AOSP browser.

You can download these ROMs and enjoy the Android 4.4 experience by hitting the links below. Update - A custom ROM based on Android 4.4 is available now for Galaxy Nexus on Verizon also.

Galaxy Nexus - SimKat Alpha ROM and A Taste of KitKat ROM

Right after the Nexus 5 launch, Google has posted information on Android 4.4 KitKat update plans for other Nexus devices.

Nexus 5

The new Nexus 5 comes with Android 4.4 pre-installed. Note that you will be prompted to install a small update when you set up your device.

Nexus 4, Nexus 7, & Nexus 10

Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 will be receiving the Android 4.4 update. The latest version will be available in the coming weeks. Once the update is released, it can take up to two weeks for it to reach your device.

Galaxy Nexus

Galaxy Nexus will not be receiving the Android 4.4 update. For more information about Galaxy Nexus, visit the Nexus Help Center.

Here is what Google says about Galaxy Nexus & Android 4.4 (KitKat) update.

Is Google releasing Android 4.4 as a system update for Galaxy Nexus?

No, Galaxy Nexus phones won’t be receiving the update for Android 4.4 (KitKat).

Why isn’t Galaxy Nexus receiving the update to Android 4.4?

Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices.

It means that Galaxy Nexus has reached its end of life and this is expected as Nexus is longer up for sale through Google atleast for an year and Texas Instruments, the maker of OMAP processor in Galaxy Nexus is not in smartphone chip business anymore.

It can’t be! Could it?

Screen shot provided by El Madhatter over at Xda has us Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners wondering if this could be true. For us geeks this isn’t that big of news because most of us already have 4.2.2 on our Galaxy Nexus one way or another. For the average Joe Blow that bought this phone because they were told by someone (probably a phone geek like us) that this phone will get Android updates faster than any other phone. Three updates behind later (thanks Big Red) Joe is using an outdated phone (Thanks again Verizon).

Its looking like we’ll have new radios, which is fantastic news but the same kernel and boot loader, which is a bit of a bummer. The new baseband info is also new and can’t be changed with a simple build.prop edit which leads me to believe this is the real deal. I guess someone could go through a hell of a lot of work to fake this but I doubt it.

So Joe Blow! Keep your head up! Your pretty little Verizon Galaxy Nexus just might be updated to 4.2.2. What do ya say Verizon?
