CyanogenMod 11.0 M1 released for current Nexus Devices

CyanogenMod 11.0 M1 – Nexus Edition

The CyanogenMod team has released CM 11.0 M1 for all actively AOSP supported Nexus devices which include the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, all variants of the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10. Instead of releasing CM11 nightlies, CyanogenMod decided to release these M1 builds citing the hardware code for current Nexus devices comes from Google’s AOSP source and should have minimal device specific issues.

Hit the links below to take you to the device specific download page at CyanogenMod.org. The CyanogenMod team recommends to double-check your download and to use ClockworkMod recovery instead of TWRP.

Android 4.4.1 coming soon to fix Nexus 5′s camera

It looks Google is set to release a new version of KitKat, Android 4.4.1, to fix the camera bugs with Nexus 5. In an interview to The Verge, Dave Burke, Google’s Director of Engineering for Android, outlined the bugs and issues in the camera software along with performance and improvements to be seen in this update. He is confident that with Android 4.4.1, the camera will not be a deal breaker for the Nexus 5 even though it does not feature the best smartphone camera.

Below are changes, improvements, and features Android 4.4.1 brings to the Nexus 5 camera.

Increased speed across the camera application
Improvements in Auto focus , exposure and white balance (by speeding up frame rate and increasing how quickly the camera can read its surroundings and fire a picture)
Fix to slow shooting speeds in good lighting conditions (caused because of OIS to get better low light images)
New progress indicator in HDR+ mode
More contrast and vibrant colored photos

Dave Burke added that, with just five weeks of work, the Nexus 5 camera has been improved a lot but that there is still more work to be done to improve both the camera performance and software. Get ready test the camera on your Nexus 5 as this update is expected to roll out in coming few days.

Latest Android Distribution Stats Released, JellyBean on 54.5 % of Devices

Yesterday Google posted the latest Android platform distribution numbers. As per these statistics, Jelly Bean is now on 54.5% of total active devices running Android. 18.6% of devices are running Ice Cream Sandwich and 24.1% are running Gingerbread. KitKat, now a month after launch, has 1.1% share. This number should rise quickly as more Nexus and Google Edition devices started receiving Android 4.4 update and OEMs start updating their flagship Android devices.

These numbers are collected through the Google Play Store application and any device that visits the Play Store in the prior 7 days will be taken into consideration. When it comes to screen configuration, 34.2% of devices sport hdpi screen followed by mdpi, xhdpi, and xxhdpi at 22.9%, 22.3%, and 9.7% respectively.

Translucent status and navigation bar in lock screen for Nexus 4

One of the good aesthetic changes Android 4.4 Kit Kat brought is translucent status and navigation bars. Unfortunately, just like Google Experience Launcher ( GEL ), these are exclusive to Nexus 5.

For the users still rocking the Nexus 4, Floydfire, a Senior Member at XDA, has decompiled, modded and recompiled the framework of Android 4.4 Kit Kat factory images so that you can have status and navigation bars translucent in home screen and lock screen. You will need to install the Google Experience Launcher (click here to download) also if you want translucent bars in home screen.

Download the appropriate recovery flashable zip files based on your Android 4.4 build number. You will need to have unlocked bootloader and custom recovery installed on your device.

Moto X Sale Postponed to Next Wednesday and Monday, CEO Issues Apology

Moto X sale postponed to next Wednesday Monday, CEO issues Apology

Motorola’s Cyber Monday promotion on customized Moto X for $349 has been postponed to 12 PM EST ( 9 AM PST ) this Wednesday ( 4th December ) and Monday ( 9th December ).

Our Moto X Moto Maker offer will go live at 12 ET on Wed and again on Monday. We apologize for the inconvenience.

This promotion was initially supposed to kicked off Yesterday 9 AM EST, but Motorola’s website crashed due to heavy traffic. Motorola gave continuous updates through its social networking channels and tried to resolve the issues with the site entire day but was unable to do so.

The Wed & Mon 12:00 p.m. ET sale will be for Moto Maker only. The Dev Edition Cyber Monday deal is sold out.

Keep in mind this sale is for customized versions of Moto X through MotoMaker only as Motorola says Dev Edition Cyber Monday deal is sold out.

Dennis Woodside, CEO of Motorola has issued an apology to customers and fans for the issues they experienced on Motorola’s website with Cyber Monday promotion. He says they’ve misjudged the demand and already found a solution to address concurrent orders through MotoMaker.

Here is the complete apology statement posted by Dennis Woodside on Motorola’s official blog.

We owe you an apology.

I want to apologize to our customers and fans for the issues we experienced on our website with our Cyber Monday promotion. I want you to understand what happened, and what we are doing to rectify the situation.

First, we misjudged the overwhelming consumer demand for Moto X, which was far greater than we expected.

Second, our pre-sale site testing was not sufficiently extensive. Testing failed to reveal weaknesses caused by large volumes of concurrent orders flowing through the MotoMaker customization engine.

Thus, when we opened the promotion this morning, an extraordinary spike in concurrent orders caused our website to go down. We couldn’t fulfill orders. The site became unstable. While some orders were filled, many customers tried all day to place their orders, unsuccessfully. Customers were left frustrated.

We have since found a solution that we believe addresses the concurrent order issue. Motorolans are hard at work right now, implementing that solution.

Here is what we are going to do: Starting at 12 pm EST/9 am PST this Wednesday, we will relaunch the $349 promotion. To help make up for this major inconvenience to shoppers, we will also add an additional promotional day on Monday, December 9. We will double the quantity of phones available, while supplies last, to allow as many people as possible to take advantage of the promotion. We’re also extending the 30% off offer on accessories to these two days.

Please note that MotoMaker.com will open up for regular business tomorrow (Tuesday, December 3). We will stay the course on our regular sales as we restore our promotional prices for Wednesday and Monday.

Samsung adds 3 new color variants to Galaxy Note 3 Line

Samsung has unveiled 3 new colored variants of the Galaxy Note 3: Rose Gold White,Rose Gold Black, and Merlot Red. It was initially launched in September with Classic White, Jet Black, and Blush Pink color options.

Here is what Samsung says on these new colored variants.

The new editions of Galaxy Note 3 integrate touches of premium Rose Gold finishes to its Jet Black and Classic White devices for a distinct and refined design. Both editions complement the iconic Rose Gold Galaxy Gear to provide users with a truly integrated and stylish Galaxy experience.

“At Samsung Mobile, we understand that consumers view their mobile devices as an extension of their personal style, and Samsung is committed to delivering fresh ways for consumers to express themselves,” said Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, IT & Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics. “By introducing these new editions of Galaxy Note 3, we want to provide our fashion-forward consumers with more ways to express their personality and tastes through our technology.”

There is no elaboration on the global availability of the new colors in the Samsung’s press note, however the Rose Gold White edition will be available in China starting this month while others will be launched according to each market’s preference.

Oppo N1 to Launch Internationally on December 10

Oppo has announced that its latest flagship Android smartphone, the Oppo N1, will be launching internationally on December 10 for $599 or €449. You can choose between two variants, one with Oppo’s Color OS (based on Android 4.2.2 JellyBean at the moment ) or the other that comes preloaded with the latest CyanogenMod software.

There is no word yet on which markets Oppo is launching the N1, but you can go to Oppo’s online store and select your country. Oppo’s N1 is first smartphone officially launching in partnership with Cyanogen, Inc. and features the world’s first rotating camera. Here are the major specs of the Oppo N1:

It seems HTC is doing a great job on pushing updates for HTC One as both the Google Play Edition of HTC One and the Developer/Unlocked Edition ( with Sense UI ) started receiving the KitKat update within one month of its launch. This roll-out is exclusive to devices in the US, and we hope it comes to devices in other markets soon.

Custom ROMs based on Android 4.4 for other variants of HTC One are now in the works. You can find screenshots here.

Update is about 863.52 MB in size and build number is 4.06.1540.2. Here is the change-log listed in update notification. It looks there is no ART ( Android run time ) in this build.

Motorola Mobility has just tweeted that the US and Global SIM free GSM variants of Moto G are now available to purchase from Motorola’s US website. Motorola priced 8GB variant at $179 and 16GB variant at $199. Order now and Motorola starts shipping from December 2.

Though both models are compatible with all GSM based cellular networks, US GSM model is optimized to work with 3G networks when operating inside the US where as Gobal GSM model is optimized to work with 3G networks when roaming outside the US.

Moto G features a 4.5 inch HD (1280 X 720) display with 329 ppi powered by 1.2 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 8/16 GB internal storage with no sd card support,5 MP rear and 1.3 MP front shooters and 2070mAh battery. It carries design elements of Moto X and comes with Android 4.3 version of Jelly Bean ( KitKat update to arrive in January 2014 ).
