SnapChat Updates its App in the Wake of a Serious Security Issue

SnapChat has finally updated its app today after promising to fix it last week. This update is going out to fix a security vulnerability which allowed a leak of 4.6 million phone numbers and usernames on New Year’s Day. The company posted an apology in a blog post which also added in the fact that the leak was due to abuse of its API, and not the result of hackers infiltrating their servers.

Prior to today’s update, the SnapChat app would ask to find your friends by plugging in your phone number and it located other SnapChat users based on what you entered. After today’s update, the app now asks you to verify your phone number first with a code sent via text message. Hopefully this results in a dramatically lower amount of abuse due to the enhanced security measure. Please tell us how you feel about this in the comments below.
