Bummer on the Knox part.

Considering Samsung is updating the S4 Mini and Mega to Android 4.4 we can rest assured that the Note 3 and S4 will also get Android 4.4. A Samsung official has already said that Samsung will be updating the Note 2 and S3 to Android 4.4. Let’s hope all the devices listed above do get Android 4.4 KitKat from Samsung.

So, there’s that fancy update VRUAME7 out there for all you Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 that allows you to move apps to your SD card and a few other goodies.

First, let me tell ya a couple things about this update.

Number one… it’s not an OTA update, so don’t bother going in to you settings and mashing that update button (good one Verizon). It’s only available via the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant by plugging your device in to a PC. Hope this doesn’t become a habit for us Verizon users. This update brings Apps to SD and similar updates that went to the Sprint Galaxy S4 we just wrote about .

Number two….. This update will block any root method and patch any bootloader unlock methods that exisist (thanks again Verizon). If you’re in to root access or flashing all those fun Roms then stay the hell away from this update. It will only be a matter of hours before someone has the updated deodoxed version up with root access over at XDA, if stock root is your thing or apps to SD for that matter.

And last but not least! Keep an eye on Adam Outler and the other devs over at Xda. Adam Outler and Verizon had a fun little game of ping pong going over the Verizon Note 2. The first unlock method created by Outer was called “Suck it Verizon”, Verizon came back and patched his method, Outler then came back at them with another unlock method called “back at ya Verizon” and so on… So watch them crafty fellas over at XDA and the little devils at Verizon.

My advice? Stay the hell away from this update!

Up until a few days ago, I had never owned or used a wallet style case on my phone. Although the design was intriguing, I never made the jump from my usual TPU or hard shell case. SPIGEN recently sent us their genuine leather Slim Wallet Case to review. I must say I am quite taken with it. The premium leather feels great in the hand, and the soft interior is a nice touch. The design is solid, and the hard shell that the phone snaps into should protect it from most drops and bumps. A slot for a credit card or ID is perfect for those who want to travel light. It also turns into a kickstand if you flip it around. At $39.99, it is somewhat expensive, but the premium materials mostly justify the cost. If you pick this case up on SPIGEN’s website, you are also eligible to get 50% off a screen protector.

If you are a fan of rugged yet slim cases, definitely take a look at the Urban Armor Gear case for the Galaxy S4. The case consists of a shock-absorbing inner rubber layer, and a rigid plastic mid-shell. Each corner has been reinforced with thick rubber to protect your phone from those deadly corner drops. UAG offers the case in four colors and includes a screen protector.
The Poetic Atmosphere is one of my favorite cases. I have had one on my Nexus 4 for the past few months, and it has done an excellent job protecting my device. Although the design as been updated, the Atmosphere still offers excellent drop and bump protection. The lip is decent, and should protect your Galaxy S4 from drops on flat and uneven surfaces. For only $8.95 on Amazon, this case is an excellent deal.

For the last few weeks I’ve been using the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S4, I was lucky enough to score one at my local At&t corporate store on the release date.

I walk up to the counter and ask the rep if I can get one, he returns with both the white and black models in 16gb as the 32gb hadn’t been released yet. I take out the black one and see its more of a grayish/fake carbon fiber look instead of a actual black. Then I open up the white and like the S2 and S3 before its white, looks amazing but still has that typical Samsung feel of being cheap and like its going to snap in half. After the rep rings me up I get a “Dry Install” Zagg front and rear screen protector which I apply in the store and to my surprise with zero bubbles. After doing so I walk out to my car and set it on the seat next to me.

Once I arrive home I figure it’s time to test out all these new and radical features Samsung bragged about at its ever so controversial and somewhat sexxist keynote. First thing I notice is when I hoover my finger over the lock screen it shows an “orb” or ripple looking think on the screen. So I wave my finger over expecting it to unlock the screen…… To my surprise it doesn’t, so I try it again and again and still nothing. So I physically touch the screen, slide my finger and unlock it. Mess around with touch wiz and while I see its changed its still the same as it’ll always be, a sluggish, showy and very unlovable launcher. Immediately I sign into the Play Store and download my ultimate favoritist(yes I said “favoritist) launcher “Nova”. I then set it up to my liking and see how much smoother it is instead of the stock “tw”.

After signing into the rest of my apps I decide to check out the other highly anticipated feature “Smart Scroll”. You know the one that will scroll up and down on a web page with the movement of your eyes or tilting of the phone? Yah well in 3 weeks, 3 phones later it still hasn’t moved when my eyes do. The tilting feature works great which is a nifty feature but honestly its just as easy to move up or down with a finger.

After playing with some other things/features I check out the settings menu and notice that I’m down to almost 6gigs of free space!! After looking around on the forums I see from others that after all the pre installed apps, features and os the phones left with right around 9gb of space. I mean seriosuly 9gb free without any user apps installed. Luckily I have my trusty 32gb micro sd card to save photos on.

Lets move on to the screen, now coming from the Xperia Z with the amazing 1080 screen it has I have high hopes and surprisingly Its nice, its rich, its crisp, vivid colors and plays movies amazingly. But if you’re not a fan of amoled I’d stay away far away.

Now after a few key features not working the lack of stock storage space I’m thinking the camera better blow me away or I’m returning it and keeping my beloved Sony Xperia Z. Well lets just say I was insanely impressed, its fast, tons of different modes to pick from and well just all around takes some awesome pictures. Here’s a few sample pictures.
On my porch:

Food!!!:

Close up:

So after 3+weeks with the phone am I impressed? No, its hyped up to be more then it really is, the cools features either work or don’t but also have that “Siri” feel to them. You know the use once and then turn it off feel. So is it worth using a upgrade on? Yah if you’re comimg from say a Galaxy S2 or similar device but not worth wasting one if you’re using a S3. Oh and to top it off I failed to mention the worse part of it all, the LOCKED bootloader. Yes you read it right, the bootloader is locked. So for now be prepared for a lack of development for now.

Oh and just so it’s clear the day the 32gb one was released I found myself in At&t returning my 16gb on for the 32gb black one.
Dont mind the bubbles as the screen protector was just applied.

A week ago from today I walked into the local At&t store and bought myself a frost white Galaxy S4, I bought it completely on an impulse with the hopes that it would maybe turn me back onto Samsung fan after being spoiled by Sony phones particularly the Sony Xperia Z.

I get home and take it out of the box, imagine the S3 box but made to look like a piece of wood. Yes I said a piece of wood, maybe it’s Samsung and At&ts way of being “green”. After taking it out of the box I turn it on, while its starting up I take a look in the box. Looking inside I see it has youre typical usb cable, decent looking set of white earbuds with your standard earpieces and your everyday powerblock. Instantly I realize my S3 came with the same exact stuff, not saying im surprised as its your typical phone extras. And just like the S3, Note series the phone feels cheap, everytime I’ve taken the battery cover off I feel like all the little tabs are going to snap. In all honestly I’ve never felt a Samsung phone feel as amazing as the captivate, hopefully one day Samsung realizes all there new phones feel like a dollar store kids toy.

I notice the phones up, its past the typical second or 2 where it has zero signal. As I unlock the screen it brings me to the Google sign in page for all the google services. I skip all that except the wifi portion and sign into my network.

First thing I do after all that is mess around with touch wiz, for those that don’t know its Samsungs native launcher. To me its the same as its always been, sluggish and full of things I’ll never use. Right then I install my beloved Nova launcher and change all the settings to what I use on any phone I install it on and like that the phone feels smooth and well better.

After setting up Nova I decide to look at all the At&t and Samsung bloat ware thats pre installed, first one I try out is “watch on”. Its the app that turns your phone in a remote control for your tv and cable box, upon opening the app it asks for your zip code so I can pull up the cable/dish providers in you’re area. I select comcast and then it asks if its a dvr box which I pick yes, I then notice the LED indicator blinks blue and the screen says “press power button, if box turns off this is the correct code. If not hit next”. So I press the power button on the screen and it turns my box off, next it asks the tvs manufacturer and I select Samsung and it goes through the same process as setting it up for my dvr. After getting both setup I give them a try, automatically noticing that for both it seems as though I have to be pointed directly at both and not far away and I’m not to impressed but then again its a phone first and remote. After messing around with it some more I turn on the air scrolling and to be honest in a week its worked exactly ZERO times, HUGE upset but after digging around online it seems others have had the issue and just got them swapped out for a new one. The “hoover” feature is cool, basically in certian apps like the photo album you can hover your finger over a picture and it blows it up for preview it. Again its another one of those features in my eyes that’s a showoff feature and not a need to have, useful feature.

After messing with the camera I look at the screen, its just like any other Amoled screen. Over saturated colors and nice blacks. Nothing screens wow like some other phones screens do.

Next I open up the camera app, snap a quick picture and am very impressed. The image is crisp, clean and the auto focus and auto detect of photo to take is great. I try out the dual camera feature and snap a pic of myself with the front camera and one of the yard with the rear camera, its a cool feature that reminds me of a postcard. The next feature I try is the sound picture, I take a picture and it gives you up to 9 seconds to record a voice message.

Over the course of the week I’ve tried basically every app that was preinstalled and to be honest none of them are need to have apps. Ive replaced the stock SMS app with handcent, use both the gmail and Yahoo mail apps over the native email app. Still using Nova over the stock loved or hated touch wiz.

Overall I’m not impressed, I find myself wanting something different and wanting to go back to my Z. In all to me this reminds me of the whole iPhone 4/4S scenario, you know basically the same phone just with a little better specs. So to all you S3 owners maybe you should save your upgrade for something besides the S4. Oh and to top it all off it has a LOCKED bootloader!!!!!

Pictures to come later!

Verizon’s not putting their logo on the S4

This is great news! We all knew that Verizon was going to be offering the Galaxy S4 in there line up this spring. What I was curious about was whether the Galaxy S4 was going to look like a NASCAR with its ugly Verizon logos all over the place, especially the home button.

Turns out the Verizon Galaxy S4 won’t be sporting the infamous Verizon logo on the home button, but only the back. I’m not sure if it’s because there’s less real estate on that home button or if it’s from all the little sticker sales that covered that logo on the Verizon Note 2. Either way I’m fine with a logo on the back only (my case will cover that).

What do you guys think? Do you care if there’s a Verizon logo on the home button? Or does it make you mental like me?
