Google Nexus 5 is official – Made for what matters.

After much rumors & speculations about the launch date, Google has finally made Nexus 5, the new 5 inch phone from Google official. Nexus 5 is running latest Android version -Android 4.4 KitKat, also launched along with it.

Google says Nexus 5 sports stunning 5 inch Full HD display powered by Android 4.4 KitKat and 8 MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization bundled with new software features  like HDR+ that has “Everything you need to capture the moments that matter”.

Though Nexus 5 has larger screen compared to Nexus 4, it’s not larger than Nexus 4 – Thanks to minimal bezel design chosen by Google and LG. It’ even lighter than Nexus 4 and the glass back is replaced by soft touch plastic.  Power button is placed on right side, volume rocker on the left, ear piece speaker on the top center as a tiny circle and dual speakers at the bottom.

Nexus 5 is up for sale in the United States, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Australia, Japan and Korea. Nexus 5 is available through Sprint for $149.99 on a 2 year contract with Sprint Unlimited Data Guarantee for Life starting November 8. You can pre-order starting November 1. T-Mobile will also carry Nexus 5 but there is no word on pricing and availability. You can sign up here to get notified when it’s available from T-Mobile. Though there is no official statement from AT&T, Google says Nexus 5 also works on AT&T and it has compatible LTE bands too.

The peeps over at AndroidPolice have managed to get there hands on Google Play Store 4.4 apk, they haven’t leaked the apk yet but have been kind enough to give us some screenshots and a glimpse of what to expect.

As you can see in the above picture, a lot of options have been moved to the slide-out menu. The current Play Store has some of these options in the other menu as can be seen below.

This menu has only 2 opriots, Help and Settings in Play Store v4.4.

All in all a good move from Google.

After Focal was pulled out of CyanogenMod due to differences between Xplodwild(developer of Focal) and Cyanogen Inc’s top brass, Focal is now available for download from the Google Play Store. What’s interesting is that the camera app has been uploaded under developer account Team BBQ which is not related to CyanogenMod.

Below are the features of Focal Camera app:-

- A photo and video mode, supporting many features (burst mode, timer mode, scene mode, shutter speed on Sony devices, …)
- A panorama mode, currently semi-broken
- A PicSphere mode, open-source replacement of Google’s PhotoSphere, to do 360° sphere shots
- A review drawer, by sliding from the top of the screen (in portrait). It shows your latest pictures.

Check your email folks if you ordered a GE phone

For those of you that have ordered  GE Galaxy S4 or HTC One, check your email!  Your tracking should be in there (may have to look around if your email looks anything like mine).

And for those of you that have been lost in the woods for the past few months.  The Google Edition Galaxy S4 and HTC One are almost 100% stock Android that are being sold at the Play Store. Just one example of the HTC One not being entirely 100% stock Android is the ability to toggle Beats Audio. I enjoy Beats, so I’m not sure that’s necessarily a bad thing.

Anyhoo….  Check that email and keep your fingers crossed you don’t get that second email like we did with the White Nexus 4.

Google Edition Samsung Galaxy S4 will set you back by $649 before taxes but shipping is free, it will be running Android 4.2.2 out of the box and supports LTE on AT&T & T-Mobile and have an unlocked bootloader (shame on you AT&T and Verizon for locking the bootloader on your versions of Samsung Galaxy S4) with 16gb of internal memory.

Google Edition HTC One will set you back by $599 before taxes & but shipping is free, it will also be running stock Android 4.2.2 out of the box and will support LTE on AT&T & T-Mobile and of course an unlocked bootloader. The internal memory will be 32gb and as per rumors will still have support for Beats Audio.

With Blackberry announcing that BBM (Blackberry Messenger) app is coming to Android and iOS soon, pranksters are up to it again. A fake BBM app called “‘blackberry messenger bbm” was published to the Play Store and downloaded by thousands of users. The app promised to start working on 27th June and also had an agreement to allow advertising network StartApp to install icons, bookmarks and more on your phone.

Even though the app was pulled bu Google from the Play Store but this is a major security concern. A lot of people are waiting for the BBM app for Android and hackers can always code something malicious and steal information from your device. Google needs to keep an eye on what apps are allowed in the Play Store and maybe verify apps before they are published. In addition to that users also need to keep an open eye and check the feedback for any new apps.

Twitter released Vine for Android after nearly after 5 months it was released for iOS. The 6 second video sharing service acquired by Twitter already boasts of 13 million users on iOS alone.

The Android version of Vine is not up to the iOS version as of now but should see some major updates in the next few weeks.

Over the coming weeks, you’ll see frequent updates with new features –– including front-facing camera, search, mentions and hashtags, and the ability to share to Facebook –– as well as bug fixes and performance improvements. Of course, this is only the beginning –– we have exciting plans for features that could exist only on Android.

You do need to be on Android 4.0 or above to install Vine on your Android device. The app is not live on the Play Store as of now but here is the Play Store link.
