Nexus devices are not generally known for that wow factor whether it be point and shoot or video quality when it comes to their cameras. The Google Nexus 5 has definitely given the Nexus brand a little more credibility in the camera department. Before I go any further I’m going to put this little disclaimer up. I am in no way a professional photographer or claim to know much of anything about cameras except I do know when I see decent picture or video quality from a phone or tablet. With that out of the way let’s take a look at the rear facing camera video.

Pretty nice right? It’s not a Nikon or Cannon, but I’m certainly impressed for an 8.0MP with OIS phone camera. It does a fine job for a cellphone camera. Better than fine. Other Android blogs like the verge have dissed the Nexus 5 camera. The Verge’s Joshua Topolsky, for instance, who said, “The Nexus 5 takes photos and video with too little contrast, too little saturation, and too little color (or inconsistent color) — when you can get the camera to focus at all. Low light performance isn’t exactly poor, but getting it to snap the picture you want at the moment you want will drive you absolutely nuts.” Now I’m a fan of the verge but, I have to disagree with Josh’s comment. Again this is coming from an everyday camera user and no expert, but just the above video I posted is proof enough that the Nexus 5 does a pretty darn good job at video duties. There is a time or two when the camera loses focus, but it grabs it right back almost instantly. I think the colors, clarity, sound and overall flow of the above video taken by the Nexus 5 is not just good but really good for a cellphone camera.

Now the pure hansdomeness of the guy in the video above may distract you from what this video is actually about. The above video is shot with the 1.3MP HD front facing camera. Once again I was pretty dam impressed with the quality of the video even for it being the FFC. Sure the sun played a villain in parts of the video and the wind made it hard to hear at times, but the overall quality for a 1.3MP front facing camera was good enough to impress me. We have weekly meetings here at AFN (or try to) and I could see that front facing 1.3MP camera doing a fine job with video and audio for everyone in the meeting to see and hear me just fine.

So there ya have it. I’m impressed with the camera on the Nexus 5. I knew when I bought the Nexus 5 it wasn’t going to have the camera capabilities the Nokia Lumia 1020 has, but I also wasn’t expecting the camera to have this nice of a video and picture quality. All in all, the Nexus 5 has a pretty dam good camera and I give it 2 thumbs up.

Take a lot of pictures and videos with your phone, ever had a picture or video spoiled because of those shaky hands, or you were in a car. Well looks like Google is about to do something abut it. The Nexus 5 will supposedly have a camera with Optical Image Stabilization aka OIC. What OIS does is that it compensates in real-time for shaking and vibrating while recording videos or taking pictures.

Images leaked from FCC filing yesterday show that the camera module on the Nexus 5 is same as that of the LG G2. Considering that the Nexus 5 will be based on the LG G2 it comes as no surprise that the Nexus 5 will have OIS.

LG G2 Camera Module

Nexus 5 Camera Module from FCC Pictures

As of now we have only a few in the market with OIS:-

HTC One

Nokia Lumia 920 and 1020

LG G2

It would be a great feature on the Nexus 5 considering mobile phones have already replaced digital cameras.

With all of the Nexus 5 rumors floating around, it can be hard to separate the possible features from the unlikely. Although few, if any, reliable sources exist at this time, it isn’t too hard to semi-accurately speculate on what the next Nexus will feature. But first, let’s take a look at some of the most popular rumored features and then move on to which are actually likely to be in the phone.

Rumors:

Tegra 4 Processor

Snapdragon 600 or 800 Processor

3 or 4GB of RAM

128GB/256GB Storage options

4.5-5.5″ Display

2800-5000mAh Battery

12-16MP Camera

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie

Reality:

Tegra 4 or Snapdragon 600

2GB of RAM

16GB-32GB Storage options

4.8″-5″ Display

2800mAh Battery

8-10MP Camera

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie

At this point, you’re probably thinking I just arbitrarily picked these specs. Let me explain why my choices make sense. Based on the previous four Nexus phones, it isn’t too hard to predict the fifth. Google has followed a general pattern since the Nexus One.

Processor:

The Nexus devices are usually on par with other high-end device on the market. That means the Nexus 5 will have a current generation processor like the Tegra 4 or Snapdragon 600. I don’t think we’ll see a Snapdragon 800 in the Nexus 5, because that’s the highest end and most expensive option. Google uses the current technology, just not necessarily the fastest and most expensive.

RAM:

On to RAM. Most of the recently manufactured phones include 2GB of RAM, and Google will most definitely follow suit. There really isn’t a need for more than 2GB of memory at this point. Remember, Apple only just updated their iPhone 5 to 1GB of RAM.

Storage:

Google really like to promote its cloud storage, so the likelihood of a 64GB or larger option is very slim. Also remember that 64GB memory chips make a phone more expensive, and Google is shooting for the mid-range market.

Display:

Expect a screen no larger than 5″ and no smaller than 4.7″. The Nexus phones are intended to introduce pure Android to regular consumers. The market for devices with pocketable screen sizes is much larger than the one for phablets.

Battery:

On the battery front, Google is starting to realize it needs to improve the longevity of their devices. I suspect Google will use a battery similar to the Galaxy S4′s in size. Hopefully, it’ll be closer to the RAZR MAXX HD’s 3300mAh cell.

Camera

Google has stated publicly that they’re going to improve camera quality, so there’s not much to speculate on here. Just don’t expect it to be 16MP. They’ll go with a good sensor, just not the absolute best(and most expensive) available.

Android OS:

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is a given. Nexus phones are released with the latest version of Android, and 5.0 is set to be released very soon.

Keep this in mind while reading Nexus rumors: Google isn’t trying to reinvent smartphone hardware. Each year, Google simply tweaks another manufacturer’s phone into being their Nexus. Most recently, it was the Optimus G that was tweaked into the Nexus 4. Above all, Google creates devices that are cost effect, which means they can’t always include the highest-end specs.
