Yesterday Google posted the latest Android platform distribution numbers. As per these statistics, Jelly Bean is now on 54.5% of total active devices running Android. 18.6% of devices are running Ice Cream Sandwich and 24.1% are running Gingerbread. KitKat, now a month after launch, has 1.1% share. This number should rise quickly as more Nexus and Google Edition devices started receiving Android 4.4 update and OEMs start updating their flagship Android devices.

These numbers are collected through the Google Play Store application and any device that visits the Play Store in the prior 7 days will be taken into consideration. When it comes to screen configuration, 34.2% of devices sport hdpi screen followed by mdpi, xhdpi, and xxhdpi at 22.9%, 22.3%, and 9.7% respectively.

Do you remember Motorola’s last foray into the tablet market? Remember how lackluster it was? Enter the Droid Xyboard 8.2 and 10.1. These tablets came out almost 2 years ago launching with Android 3.0, a.k.a. Honeycomb. They were then updated to 4.0, ICS, but then they were lost in the shuffle of the myriad of Android tablets that followed.

Starting yesterday, Verizon is trying to make up for the lackluster product that is the Xyboard line. They are updating them to Android 4.1.2, JellyBean. I know it isn’t the latest, but the new Motorola is trying their hardest to become a respectable competitor in the mobile field again. These tablets don’t have the best specs, but for the time, they were actually above average. Anyway, go ahead and try and pull down the update via Settings > About Tablet > System Updates, and rejoice in the buttery goodness that is JellyBean!

Android 4.3 update coming soon to Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Last week we heard news on Android 4.3 JellyBean update rolling out to international variants of Samsung Galaxy S3 and it looks that Galaxy Note 2 will also receive this update soon.

Samsung customer service centers usually get the access to device updates prior to the rollout to customers. A guy from India got Android 4.3 installed on his Galaxy Note 2 ( international variant GT-N7100 ) from his local Samsung service center.

Build number of this Android 4.2 firmware is N7100XXUEMJ9 and build date is October 31st. There is no change log yet but you could expect support for Galaxy Gear, Trim, ANT+ along with OS update to Android 4.3. This update may also include updates to Samsung keyboard, new camera modes, new S-voice, new settings UI etc.

Galaxy Note 2 ( International variant ) users can expect this update soon and hopefully this update also lands soon on carrier variants of Note 2.

Sony states that it will be updating the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 to Android 4.4.

This is great news folks! 52.1% of the millions of Android devices are running Jelly bean (4.1-4.3). That means that devices running Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich are starting to dwindle. Which is such a great thing considering Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb left a bad taste in a lot of users mouths (like mine). Ice Cream Sandwich wasn’t so bad, but Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb were bloody nightmares in my opinion (remember not having CM8?). There are obviously no numbers for KitKat yet, but it’s only a matter of time before the PIA Android versions percentage gets smaller.
