Despite the collective groan earlier this week by HTC One X and One X+ owners about not receiving updates past Android 4.2.2, one group of owners, those with AT&T branded handsets, have still not received the “final” firmware already enjoyed worldwide.

The silver lining in this rain cloud is that Android 4.2.2 and Sense 5.0 should finally roll out to the AT&T HTC One X+, and the One X is soon to follow. HTC’s Mohammed Versi, Executive Director, Product Management, announced the HTC One X+ firmware passed AT&T’s technical acceptance and is scheduled for release this week.

AT&T One X+ users – We have received technical acceptance from AT&T today. Expect the OTA update to OS 4.2.2 + Sense 5 later this week.

— Mo (@moversi) January 14, 2014

In a reply to his Tweet regarding the HTC One X+, Versi also assured the One X is still targeted for next week. We’ll keep and eye open and let you know when we see it.

Sound off below in the comments: do you think the HTC One X+ would benefit from a further bump to Android 4.3 and Sense 5.5, or would that leave owners with a horrible, lag filled, experience?

HTC confirms that it will no longer update HTC One X and One X+. Both of these devices are currently running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, with Sense 5 UI, and HTC says they will not receive any further Android OS updates.

HTC One X, released in April 2012 was HTC’s Android flagship device for 2012. It came in two variants, One featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual core processor and other with NVIDA Tegra 3 processor. HTC One X+ was later released in October 2012 featuring faster Tegra 3 processor, increased battery and storage capacities.

@HTC UK has responded to an user who inquired on rumors on HTC One X + not getting Android 4.4 KitKat update, despite being just 14 months old.

@davidjorourke Hi. We can confirm that the One X+ will not receive further Android updates & will remain on the current version of Android.

— HTC UK (@HTC_UK) January 9, 2014

Later, in a statement to The Verge, HTC confirmed that both One X and One X + will not receive any further updates.

We can confirm that the HTC One X and One X+ will not receive further Android OS updates beyond Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5. We realize this news will be met with disappointment by some, but our customers should feel confident that we have designed both devices to be optimized with our amazing camera and audio experiences.

Though no specific reason was detailed by HTC, I believe it is a bad decision considering One X + is just 14 months old and these devices are capable of running latest Android Software.

According to Engadget China, HTC has just launched a very striking red version of its popular One Max. This version is following closely behind the recent black version which launched recently in Hong Kong. This red variant of the Max sports a full on red anodized coating to the aluminum body with a red plastic trim. Personally, I find this to be much more appealing than the red HTC One, with its black trim. Aside from the color change, there is no change in specs from its silver sibling. There is currently no word on availability outside the Taiwanese market.

Have you ever thought what the number of software update for your HTC device mean? Here is a simple explanation given posted by @mike1986, well-known for his Android Revolution HD series of ROMs for HTC devices.

HTC uses different build numbers, even for the same device, based on country and model. Settings like time-zone, network and GPS, and carrier customizations differ by country. The same device might be also available in various hardware configurations with some having GSM and HSPA on one set of radio bands while others include LTE support specific to the region or carrier.

Updates for any HTC device follow below numbering structure:

a.bb.ccc.d

where

a – the first number of the software. Normally it doesn’t increase very often, but when it does, it usually means newer Android version.

bb – this number is also a software number. Increasing bb number means some more or less major update based on the same Android version, but sometimes it might even bring newer version of the HTC Sense.

ccc (also cc or cccc) – this is the number of the region/carrier. It has nothing to do with the software itself being newer or older. More details below.

d (sometimes dd) – the third part of the software version (the fourth one in the RUU name). Usually indicates some minor update with some hot fixes.

For a specific device, field ccc remains same across builds. Bump in fields a or bb indicates that it is a major update where as bump in d indicates a minor update.

Below this image shows the Android 4.4 KikKat update notification for HTC One U.S. Developer Edition.

The ROM build number is 4.06.1540.2 where

4 (a) indicates bump in Android version ( earlier build numbers had 3 here )

1540 (cccc) denotes that it is for HTC One Developer Edition

06 (bb) indicates this is sixth build with same Android version

2 (d) indicates minor changes in the build (a bump in this field indicates build has only minor changes)

Here is the list of possible build number variants based on country and model. (collected by @mike1986)

Fingerprint scanner on HTC One Max not working after bootloader unlock?

Have you bought an HTC One Max, new phablet with 5.9 inch screen from HTC and getting ready to unlock the bootloader for rooting or flashing custom ROMs? If yes- then don’t unlock it yet. Several HTC One Max users at XDA are complaining that finger print scanner is not working after unlocking the bootloader.

XDA member hectorz321 reported when tried to set a finger print to unlock the phone again, after wiping my finger for the final time it says “finger print not recorded, please try again”. He also tried relocking the bootloader but it did not fixed the issue. Another senior member clubtech also confirmed that unlocking the bootloader kills the finger print scanner functionality.

So guys, It’s better to wait until HTC comes up with some solution to resolve this issue.
