MotoRoot has been released peeps, you can use it to root your AT&T and Verizon Moto X, Droid Ultra, Maxx & Mini. Getting root is pretty easy.

Grab the apk file from here for Moto X and from here for Droid Ultra, Maxx and Mini

Install the apk using adb adb install -r <filename>

Run MotoRoot app from app drawer

Press Setup

Wait for phone to reboot

Install SuperSU from Play Store

The root does have a few limitations though:-

Uninstalling the app will disable root until reinstalled

supersu is not able to update su yet – will be fixed in an update shortly

su is not available for the first few seconds of boot – will be fixed soon

/system is write protected, even with unlocked bootloaders you can not write to it while booted in Android.

In case you want to unroot (not sure why you would want to do this) either factory reset, or press the unroot menu option in the app.

In addition to being rooted it looks like all of these (including the AT&T and Verizon Moto X) may also be able to load custom roms. As always do not and we repeat DO NOT take any OTA updates on any of these phones in case you want root. The method is yet to be released and we will keep you updated with the release.

It’s not often us Verizon guys get to say “look what we got”. But, look at what we got!

We die hard Android heads on Big Red have some decisions to make over the next few days and months. Do we go with the 6 month old HTC One? Do we go the 2013 Droid route? Or do we get a white or black Moto X?

Let’s start with the HTC One. This phone has been released by other carriers for quite a while now, and it’s no longer news or the new phone on the block. It also appears the Verizon HTC One is having some development issues due to the age and the freaking pad lock Verizon put on it. With that said, it’s still an extremely sexy phone, maybe the sexiest for that screen size, and will make anyone happy for a long time (unless you’re trying achieve root).

The Droid family is also a great lineup for Verizon. Except us Android Geeks know all so well the woes that come with those boot loaders. The Droid Maxx seems to be the most logical decision out of the 3 with that battery, casing and screen size, all for only $100 more, which isn’t much in the grand scheme of things in a 24 month contract. Either way, the Droid lineup this year is pure win if you should go that route.

Now for the phone I’m most excited about, The Moto X. In my opinion this is the phone to get this Fall of 2013 and beyond. It’s the most talked about phone right now, which usually means it will hold its value longer than the above two choices, it’s so dam near stock Android, it “will” have Moto Maker and just so many other reasons to go out and grab this phone. Yeah, we have to worry about how hackable this device may be, we won’t see any Moto Maker until October – November and it’s not a spec monster. But, even in black and white and the specs it has, it’s still going to be a hell of a daily driver and tons of fun.

So what have we learned from all this? Nothing! Get what you feel is the best bang for your buck or whichever phone suites your needs as a daily grinder. All three have their downfalls and strengths.

My advice… Wait a couple months and get a customized Moto X when that feature is available. Out of the three choices I’ve mentioned above, the Moto X is the biggest draw, will also hold it’s value longer than the others and just all around a beauty.

PS. We have the LG G2 and other great devices coming as well.

Before any AT&T customers run out and grab a DROID ULTRA or DROID MAXX, I would wait and see how all of this unfolds. The ULTRA and MAXX support global HSPA networks on 850/900/1900/2100 bands and AT&T uses 850 and 1900. I wouldn’t be surprised if Verizon shuts this down before long.

If you’re a cell phone trading addict and want to try out a DROID ULTRA or DROID MAXX on AT&T, do it quick while it lasts.

Head on over to Cell Trader Online and see if any of the guys over there have a Droid Ultra or Droid Maxx for sale or trade while the two are still getting AT&T love – WWW.CellTraderOnline.com

Droid mini $99, Droid Ultra $199 and The Droid Maxx $299

Here we go again. Motorola is announcing their Droid family line up, pricing and availability date. They did a hell of a job in 2012 with the RAZR HD, RAZR Maxx HD, RAZR M and now in 2013 launching three new bad ass devices.

The Droid Ultra is the thinnest of three with a Kevlar body at $199, then we have the Droid Maxx with the same Kevlar build and claiming to get 48 hours of battery life at $299, and last but not least is the Droid Mini with a 4.3″ screen with a similar looking build and software at $99.

This years Droid lineup offers Zapp – that let’s you share photos with other devices up to 300 ft, fast picture taking with Quick Capture, and Active display that shows notifications with out turning your phone on.

Pre-orders start NOW and will be available August 20th from droiddoes.com. Purchases also include an Ingress invite and 6 months of Google Play Music All access.

Now let’s just hope these devices get more developer friendly as the years go on. Motorola has always built high quality devices with great radios, but have always been a bummer in the development department.

More on the Droid Family line up as we learn more.

Official press release notes.

Trio of New DROID Smartphones Coming to Verizon Wireless

MINI, ULTRA and MAXX: Cutting-edge design meets strength and agility.

A new family of exclusive DROID smartphones is coming soon to Verizon Wireless: DROID MINI, DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX by Motorola. Keeping up with the DROID tradition, these devices give users what’s expected from a DROID on Verizon – intelligence, strength and endurance.

It starts with DROID Command Center, an exclusive homescreen widget for users to easily access notifications for text messages, missed calls, battery level and weather. It also serves as the gateway to new features including Wireless Display to mirror what’s on the screen onto a compatible HDTV to play games, browse the web and share pictures on a big screen.

Taking a picture and sharing it is now as easy as shake, tap and swipe. Quick Capture lets users access the 10-megapixel camera by shaking the phone twice, then tapping anywhere on the screen to snap a pic or a selfie. Sharing with a friend or a group of friends nearby is simple with the DROID Zap feature. Swiping up on a picture instantly shares it with fellow new DROID owners nearby, all they need to do is swipe down on their screen to receive it.

Hands are full or messy? Wake up the DROID by saying “Ok Google Now” and then tell it what you want to do. And for those users who constantly lose their phone under the couch or around the house, they can simply say “Ok Google Now, call my DROID” and it will start ringing. And Active Notifications lets users preview messages and app alerts without waking their phone.

These Touchless Controls and Active Display let users make calls, send texts, get directions, play music, set a reminder and preview notifications hands-free without having to unlock the phone, giving DROID users a whole new way of interacting with their phones.

The first DROID launched in November 2009 and included features new at the time such as Google Maps Navigation. It was also the first smartphone to feature Android 2.0. The new trio of DROID devices continues to give innovative features.

DROID MINI: A compact design with an edge-to-edge 4.3-inch HD display and wireless charging capabilities.

DROID ULTRA: The thinnest 4G LTE smartphone available, measuring 7.18mm, and with a 5-inch HD display. The ULTRA will be available in Black and Red models.

DROID MAXX: Features wireless charging and a 3500mAh battery that gives users nearly two days of battery life on a single charge, making it the longest lasting 4G LTE smartphone available.

These DROID smartphones are made with DuPont Kevlar fiber unibody design and will be available for pre-order online starting today, July 23, at 1 p.m. ET. The DROID ULTRA and DROID MAXX will be available for purchase starting Aug. 20 and the DROID MINI will be available starting Aug. 29.
Verizon expected to “Unveil the next generation of one of its most popular family of devices” next week in NYC

Look’s like Verizon will be introducing the world to the Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini at their press event in New York City next week. The three devices are looking to replace the Droid Razr HD, Droid Razr Maxx HD and the Droid Razr M that were also introduced last summer in New York.

Motorola and Verizon definitely produce some stellar hardware, with great radios and decent looking devices, but they’re a real pain in the ass in the bootloader department. Let’s hope this go round with these three will be a little more development friendly. Unlockable bootloaders certainly won’t hurt sales, and I’m pretty sure they know that, but stupid is as stupid does.

XDA’s Recognized developer JoelZ9614 is at it again! Keeping an older device (in Android Years) up to date.

If you ask me, which I know you are because I know everything, just ask my wife. The HTC Droid DNA will get the Sense 5 and Android version 4.2.2 update. When will that be? Who the hell knows with Verizon (guess I don’t know everything)!? Them crafty little devils over at XDA won’t let Verizon stand in their way. They rarely do.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this port for the past couple days and this is what I know about it in a nutshell. For now, this ROM will not work for Verizon (CDMA) users, but reception and data are working for GSM users. Some GSM users that flashed the ROM have said they have absolutely zero issues with the ROM and claim it to be a daily driver, while others are saying they’re getting the occasional reboot and other minor bugs. If I were on GSM, I’d be all over this ROM!

Screen shot from a GSM user getting a great data signal

My Droid DNA is currently running XDA Recognized Developer newtorrot’s HTC One rom port with Sense 5 and Android version 4.1.2 (quick glimpse can be found here) for the past few weeks and I haven’t had a single bug or issue with it yet. Ports can be daily drivers.

So, if you like tinkering and keeping the latest versions of Android and Sense, I’d head on over to XDA and get your flash on. If tinkering under the hood of your phone isn’t your thing, like I said, Sense 5 and 4.2.2 will make it to your Precious. The HTC Butterfly (The Droid DNA’s twin brother) has gotten an update, but then again the Butterfly isn’t affiliated with Big Red.

JoelZ9614′s Xda thread with more info.

BTW. I’m not sure if JoelZ9614 is pulling our leg, but he claims to be 16. I was flashing this guys Roms back in the HTC Evo 3D days. That was 2 years ago and if my math is correct…. that would have made him 14 years old cranking out Roms for the 3D.

UPDATE!

Here is JoelZ9614 latest post in his Droid DNA thread –

“here we go =) seems to be no reboots removed perflock and htcpnpmgr thanks to zarboz’s suggestion, also running row io scheduler, now ill work on vzw”

Not sure if that means now “it will” work on Verizon or now “I will” work on Verizon. Keep an eye on this guy’s (or kid’s) thread because he is an absolute maniac when it comes to knowing his way around Android and creating masterpieces.

Thanks for everything JoelZ9614!
